  • This week is National Police Memorial week. The City of Troy Police Department joins the nation in honoring those police officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens they served. Troy honors three of our own who have made this sacrifice:
    • Officer Charles Smetana was killed on December 11, 1969. He was responding to an injury accident in the early morning hours when his patrol car struck the overpass abutment at Big Beaver and I-75.
    • Officer Martin "Marty" Chivas was killed on April 22, 1974. He was investigating a burglary in progress at a service station located on Rochester Road at Interstate 75 when he was shot and killed by the burglars.
    • Officer Charles "Chuck" Mulvihill, died on September 11, 2001. He was on duty three days earlier and suffered apparent heart failure while responding to a call for service.

We invite everyone to join us on Thursday May 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. for our Police Memorial Ceremonies in front of our police station, located at 500 West Big Beaver Road, Troy, MI. Following the memorial service we will honor our 2012 Police Officer of the Year, Command Officer of the Year, and Non-Sworn Employee of the Year, as well as other officers and civilians who contributed exemplary service in 2012 in an awards ceremony.

We also invite everyone to our Open House on Saturday May 18, 2013 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. We will have building tours, police vehicle displays, K-9 demonstrations, child fingerprinting, bicycle registrations, blood pressure checks, and refreshments. Entertainment will be kindly provided by the Troy High School Jazz Combo Band.

We hope to see everyone there!

  • Alcohol Awareness Project It is that time of year for high school proms, graduations and graduation parties. For more than 14 years, in an effort to promote a safe and enjoyable
graduation season, a police officer of the Troy Police Department, assigned to the Community Services Section has personally called on each hotel and motel in the city to distribute “Alcohol Awareness” packets to employees of these establishments. The Police Department is committed to education as a method to prevent the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors and the strict enforcement of all violations of applicable laws and ordinances.

It is the Police Department’s intent to inform hotel and motel management and employees about the potential consequences of renting rooms to minors intending to possess and consume alcoholic beverages on their premises. The informational packets include City of Troy Ordinances and Michigan State Laws related to the possession and consumption of alcohol by minors. In addition, they include a list of prom and graduation dates and event locations for area high schools. The Troy Police Department is confident that with this
information, hotel and motel employees will be better prepared to assist in the effort to prevent alcohol abuse by minors during the graduation season and throughout the year.

The management teams of the City’s hotels and motels have established themselves as outstanding partners in the community’s efforts to make this annual project a success.
