History of Department

Deputy Chief Gary G. Mayer

The Deputy Chief of Police reports directly to the Chief of Police, has staff authority over all Department functions, and in the absence of the Chief of Police assumes authority of all Department operations.

  • Assists the Chief of Police in the overall management and administration of the Department.
  • Directs the preparation and administration of the Department budget, and authorizes purchases.
  • Makes recommendations and prepares reports regarding organizational structure, staffing levels, facilities needs, and departmental training requirements.
  • Responsible for the evaluation, selection, purchase, implementation, and maintenance of all department computer hardware, software, and computerized/automated systems.
  • Responsible for the identification of homeland security and emergency preparedness needs, the procurement of equipment related to those needs, and the implementation of such equipment and/or related programs/policies.
  • Participates in labor negotiations and liaisons with Department labor associations.
  • Serves on various community and law enforcement boards and committees.
