Property Section

The Property Section is responsible for the intake, storage and disposal of all evidence, seized property, lost/found items and prisoner property. The section is also responsible for issuing and tracking all Police Department equipment and fixed assets.

Approximately 5,000 items are processed through the Property Room each year.  One Police Service Aide is assigned full-time and one is assigned part-time to the Property Section to manage the inventory.

The Property Section holds an annual Police Auction, offering to the public all unclaimed property, some well used Police Department property, and on occasion, forfeited property. The 2006 Police Auction produced $4,454.00 in revenue for the City of Troy.

If you have lost an item within the City of Troy, or wish to find out more about the Police Auction, please contact Service Aide Sam Kalef.

Bicycles tend to be the most space-consuming items in the property room. Every year we sell dozens of bicycles at the police auction. The Property Officers would like to encourage residents to use the bicycle registration form to register and label their bicycles with the Police Department. This will allow them to identify the owners of found or recovered bicycles and return the property to them. This is a free service to Troy residents.

The Property Section is supervised by Sergeant Robert Cantlon.
