Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud:

A 57-year-old male complainant from Troy met a female via the Internet.  It appears they were conversing by phone, as well.  She claimed she was in London from the U.S.  She claimed she was owed money from a company in California and needed assistance getting cash for the money orders she was sent by the company in question.  It appears she indicated she was unable to do so herself due to being out of the country, and her friend back in California who lent her money before the trip was now in dire straights for cash.   He was to receive the money orders from the company in question, deposit them into his bank account, and wire $1000.00 in cash to her friend in California. He was then to wire the balance to her in London so she could pay for expenses related to her trip, including flight tickets back to the U.S.  Complainant deposited the money orders, (four at $840.00 each) and initiated the wire transfers.  However, he received word from his bank that the money orders were counterfeit.  He was able to stop the wire transactions in time such that he did not sustain any losses.

Complainant reported mistakenly leaving her credit card in the gas pump after fueling her car.  When she realized it was lost and called her bank, she was advised the card had already been used to make fraudulent purchases at the station in question in Troy, as well as in Detroit.

Complainant’s bank account accessed on-line and approximately $1400.00 worth of funds fraudulently removed to make payments on several credit accounts complainant is unfamiliar with.

Complainant reported discovering $524.00 fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account when reviewing his statement.  The withdrawals appear to have occurred at ATM machines.  Two occurred in Troy and one in Detroit.

Another fraud complaint taken regarding a company doing business as “Royal Oak Financial Group” via the Internet representing they are located at 1441 E. Maple in Troy.  Complainant arranged for a loan with stipulation that she had to wire $1000.00 in cash to a location in Canada to cover insurance for the $15,000.00 loan she was to receive for school.  She wired the money.   When the loan was never deposited into her account, she re-contacted the business.   They asked for another $1500.00, which she did not send.  She asked for her money back, which she has not received. She contacted Better Business Bureau who advised they have 36 other similar complaints against the same company to date.  U.S. Postal Inspectors are conducting on-going investigation into this business/frauds.

Domestics/Family Troubles:

Troy officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence.  Upon arrival, complainant reported her ex-husband had apparently climbed through a window and was inside her house.  Her doors were locked at the time, but a window was open and the screen appeared to have been dislodged.  He had been drinking and left the scene on a bike prior to officers’ arrival.  He has never resided at the location.  Officers located the 33-year-old male from Troy.  He claimed he was at there residence to visit his children.  He stated when he knocked and received no answer that he walked in.  He was arrested for “Unlawful Entry.”

Officers responded to the location on 7/14 on a report of a physical confrontation between a 46 year old male and his 36-year-old brother. Upon arrival, neither was present.  Their 74-year-old father stated the older intervened between the younger brother and their mother when the younger began swearing at their mother during the course of an argument over her refusing to give him money.  The younger reportedly has an illegal drug problem. It was unknown which brother initiated the physical confrontation.  When officer spoke to the older by cell phone in an attempt to follow-up, the subject advised the officer he did not wish to pursue the matter, told the officer to “f--- off,” indicated he lived in Macomb, not in Oakland County, and invited the officer to “come get me.”  On 7/15 at 0550 hrs. Officers responded to the same location on another altercation and discovered the 36-year-old male exiting the residence with blood running down his face from a laceration on his cheek.  He advised his brother entered the residence and confronted him while he was asleep.  He stated his brother was armed with a pair of tree clippers, which he swung at and struck him with.  He disarmed his brother and proceeded to engage him with his fists until his brother fled.  Officers also located a hammer handle just outside the door of the residence.  Both the hammer handle and the clippers were reportedly stored in the garage prior to the incident.  Victim refused medical treatment.  Officers located the 46-year-old suspect entering his residence in Sterling Heights.  His face was covered in blood and he had a laceration above his eye.  He stated he went to the house to get revenge against his brother for treating his mother badly and punching him the night before.  He admitted striking his brother with an object, but claimed he didn’t recall what that object was. He stated he only armed himself with the object after his brother armed himself with an object.  He denied removing the clippers from the garage or using them against his brother. He was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released into custody.  He was charged with “Felonious Assault.”

Crime Prevention Tips

Alcohol / Drugs

Be responsible, if you drink, DO NOT DRIVE!

If you serve alcohol, make sure that your guests make it home safely.

Don’t serve alcohol to under-aged children

We all must share the roads, don’t risk the lives of others or yourself.  It is not a good idea to mix Alcohol with other activities like boating or swimming.  If you drink, do it in moderation and don’t drive or put yourself and other at risk.

·        DO NOT use illegal drugs

·        DO NOT drive and endanger the lives of everyone if you have consumed alcohol or drugs.

·        If you are under 21 years of age, IT IS ILLEGAL to consume or possess alcohol.

If you have any information on illegal drug activity call our tip line at 248-524-0777.

Vandalism Prevention

The best way to protect yourself from this crime, or from being held financially responsible for the acts of your kids, is to know where your children are, what they are doing, and whom their friends are.  Kids are very tech-savvy, and use the latest means to communicate.  We have had numerous cases where middle and high-school aged kids have made clandestine plans using their home computer and instant-messaging programs (AIM, Yahoo Messenger, etc.) to communicate with their friends, unbeknownst to their parents (no phones ringing in the middle of the night.)  They sneak out of the house and meet up to go and commit all sorts of crimes.  This is not only illegal, but it is very dangerous.

·        Talk with your kids and encourage them to tell you about any problems with other kids.

·        Monitor your child’s instant messages.

·        Don’t put computers with Internet access in their bedrooms.

·        Lock the doors to the house and set alarms when you go to bed.

·        Make a habit of checking on the kids, no matter what age, in the middle of the night, just to make sure they are where they are supposed to be (especially when hosting sleepovers.)  Let them know that you are checking.

·        Check your vehicles for new damage or signs of being involved in vandalism - Mud on tires or wheel-wells, baseball bats with gouges or glass in them, egg cartons, knives or other sharp objects that are out of place in a car, cans of spray paint or shaving cream (yes shaving cream and eggs damage paint.)

If you suspect that your kids have been out vandalizing property, or committing any other crimes, you can contact the Police Department Juvenile Unit, or Troy Youth Assistance for advice.

General

If you witness a crime:

Ø      get involved

Ø      call the police

It is easier to catch a criminal if we are called right away, while they are still in the area.

Larcenies from Autos / Car Theft

Things that can be done to combat auto theft and larcenies from autos include:

Ø       Installing a car alarm.

Ø      Using steering-wheel locking applications like the club etc.

Ø      Applications of a hidden kill switch to the ignition system.

Ø      Park in a well lit well traveled area if possible.

Ø      Always maintain security of vehicle keys.

Ø      Do not leave anything of value in your vehicle in plain view.

Ø      Always lock your vehicle doors.

Ø      Never leave a vehicle unattended while running.

Ø      There is a trend of things being stolen from vehicles in the parking lots of fitness centers and fun centers. While going to these places, be extra careful to remove all items of value and secure your vehicle.
