Assaults:

John R near 14 Mile, 10/13, 2350 hrs.

Complainant stated he was drunk and exchanged words with the occupants of a beige Toyota Corolla as the Corolla exited a parking lot to enter John R.  (Apparently complainant was on foot.)  He claimed they exited the vehicle and punched him.  The Toyota registers to a male from Hamtramck.

Adams, 10/13, 1050 hrs.

Complainant reported a male and female showed up at his residence, tried but were not successful in pushing their way inside when he answered the door, and then chased him around outside when he did eventually exit to make sure they weren’t trying to damage one of his cars.  He called 911 on his cell.  They were gone when officers arrived, apparently scared off by a fire truck that went by with sirens sounding, thinking it was the police.  Complainant explained the female was the soon to be ex-wife of one of his friends.  He stated he recently advised his friend the female had been cheating on him with the male that showed up with her on today’s date.  They showed up to confront him over the revelation.

Mobil Station, 1881 E. Maple, 10/17, 1700 hrs.

A 14-year-old male from Sterling Heights stated while inside the station he noticed a subject outside harassing his friends.  When he walked out the suspect confronted him, swearing at him while so doing.  Complainant stated when he responded to the suspect’s threats indicating he was just talking on his cell phone, the suspect hit him in the face and pushed his head back.  Suspect was driving a ’99 GMC Jimmy registered to a 50-year-old male from Warren. Evidence however, indicates the vehicle was driven by two males from Warren, one 25 and one 21.  They match the age described by the victim.  No injuries; victim’s father contacted who came to the scene and picked him up.

Concession Stand Football Stadium, Athens High, 4333 John R, 10/19, 2030 hrs.

A 14 and 15-year-old male got into a minor physical altercation when one confronted the other over a rumor he heard indicating the other was planning on assaulting him.  Apparently similar rumors from other sources were heard by the second youth; he had shown up wearing a football chest protector under his clothing as well as brought a pair of scissors with him to protect against any assault.  The scissors were never brought out.  Each apologized to the other and turned over to their respective parents.

Morton’s, 888 W. Big Beaver, 10/19, 2208 hrs.

Officers responded to a fight in progress.  Upon arrival it was over, and officers learned that it involved a 24-year-old male from Pontiac, a 37-year-old male from Troy, and a 22-year-old male from Berkley.  Apparently they were together.  According to the 22 and 24 year olds, while exiting through the lobby the 37 year old came running out towards them, accused the 24 year old of making faces at him, and grabbed the 24 year old by the throat.  When the 22 year old tried to get between them, the 37 year old punched him in the face.  At that point a fight ensued between the three.   According to the 37 year old, he was jumped after saying something to the 24 year old.  Minor injuries; none wished to press charges, so they were released.

Officer queried the plate of a Cutlass Ciera after observing suspicious driving/actions on the part of the male and female occupant.  The car eventually parked and the occupants went inside the mall.  As they did, the computer query indicated the vehicle was stolen from Lincoln Park.  When the occupants returned and re-entered the vehicle, officers attempted to block it in its spot, however it managed to maneuver around the patrol units and fled.  It was last seen traveling east on 14 Mile without lights.  The male was driving.

Home Invasions:

Niles street, 10/14, 0100-0330 hrs.

Officers summoned to a duplex on Niles Street at 0700 hours when complainant received a call from Sylvan Lake PD inquiring if he knew the whereabouts of his ’99 Toyota Corolla.  They explained to him that when their officer tried to stop it around 0600 hours, it fled, crashed and two male subjects fled/escaped on foot.  Upon checking his house, complainant discovered the bathroom window screen ripped open, his keys missing, front door unlocked, and his Toyota missing from the drive.  The resident in the adjoining duplex reported he was asleep on the sofa in his living room.  When he woke up in the morning, he discovered his car keys missing from the coffee table, two cell phones missing from the living room, as well as his Mitsubishi missing from the driveway.  The bathroom window screen was cut and the window open.  The front door was found unlocked; he knew he had locked it.  When officers checked with another resident in a nearby house, he reported hearing noises at about 0200 hours as if someone was trying to open the front door.  He went downstairs to investigate and it appeared normal.  He stated he heard car doors slamming and voices outside.  He saw a dark colored truck in the roadway, but no one around.  In the morning he discovered pry marks on his bathroom window; no entry was gained.  A resident on Blackwell, which is just north of Niles, reported that at approximately 0300 hours he responded to a knock at his front door.  He stated there was four B/M’s standing outside who indicated they were part of a neighborhood watch group, and requested he open his door so they could speak with him.  When he didn’t open it and alerted the other residents in the home, they departed and entered a large black pickup, which left the area.  There was a fifth individual inside the truck.  While Troy officers were investigating these incidents, Orchard Lake PD contacted Troy and advised they had located, detained the two suspects who fled from the crashed Toyota, and transported them to Sylvan Lake.  Troy Investigators went to SLPD and took the 14 and 15-year-old males from Pontiac into custody.  Juvenile court petitions were initiated against them; they were processed, and eventually released to parents.  The incidents appear to have occurred between 0100-0300 hrs.  The other three suspects are described as B/M’s, mid to late teens.  The Mitsubishi is still out; investigation continues.

Apparently they were with a larger group that was present earlier, the majority of which had left after one of the group paid the group’s tab with a credit card.  After the group left, the three who remained behind asked the waitress to start another tab for them.

Crime Prevention Tips

Home Invasion / B&E

Always secure your doors and windows.

Ø      Garages and door walls are targets for thieves.

Ø      Always ensure your garage door and pedestrian doors are secured.

Ø      Do not leave garage door remote controls in cars not parked in the garage.

Ø      Use 1 ½’’ dowel rod in the track of all sliding glass windows and doors to help prevent them from opening.

Ø      It has been proven time and time again that the proper use and application of physical security will stop a would-be burglar.

Ø      Burglary alarms are only as reliable as the person setting them.  If you have an alarm, make sure that every resident or employee knows how to activate and deactivate it, as well as the security code.

Larceny

Ø      Always keep control of all your property.

Ø      Your belongings are not safe while you are playing sports or at work unless you have them properly locked or are in possession of them.

Ø      Thieves wait for the right time and will take property quickly.

Ø      Unfortunately you cannot always trust co-workers or other business associates.

Ø      Do not rely on others to watch your belongings.  If they fail, you will be the victim, not them.

Ø      Be cautious of who you allow into your home. If you invite guests that you really do not know into your home you are inviting trouble.

Larcenies from Autos / Car Theft

Things that can be done to combat auto theft and larcenies from autos include:

Ø       Installing a car alarm.

Ø      Using steering-wheel locking applications like the club etc.

Ø      Applications of a hidden kill switch to the ignition system.

Ø      Park in a well lit well traveled area if possible.

Ø      Always maintain security of vehicle keys.

Ø      Do not leave anything of value in your vehicle in plain view.

Ø      Always lock your vehicle doors.

Ø      Never leave a vehicle unattended while running.

Ø      There is a trend of things being stolen from vehicles in the parking lots of fitness centers and fun centers. While going to these places, be extra careful to remove all items of value and secure your vehicle.
