Retention Pond near 1400 Stephenson Highway, 10/1, 1930 hrs.

While checking the building in response to an entry alarm, which was determined false, officers detected a strong chemical odor that appeared concentrated near the storm water retention pond next to the building.  There appeared to be a film on the water.  The Troy Fire Department’s Special Response Unit (Hazardous Materials Unit) responded.  They conducted water sample tests, which indicated the presence of Ammonium Chloride.  Continued sampling up current along the storm creek and drain system that leads into the pond produced similar readings.  The positive results for the chemical ended at a storm water grate on Allen Street, which is in an industrial subdivision west of Stephenson.  The pavement surrounding the grate in question was wet.  The storm system was flushed with bio-solve to neutralize the chemical.  Ammonium Chloride is commonly used as an herbicide or pesticide.  It is suspected a portion of the substance was dumped/discarded into the sewer system over the Allen Street sewer grate to which it was traced.  There were no injuries or medical conditions reported associated with the incident; nor were any wildlife found affected.
