Crime Alert for period ending August 3, 2007 Altercations/Disorderly Conduct: Assaults: LaSalle Bank, 2699 W. Big Beaver, 7/26, 1554 hrs. Bank manager explained a 41-year-old female from Troy entered the bank
and tried to cash a check wherein the signature did not match that which was
on file. The manager called the
account holder who stated the “female was his wife and that she had signed his
name.” The manager explained to
him “they couldn’t cash the check because the signature didn’t match.” He advised her “to return it to his
wife.” The manager explained the
situation to the customer and stated she “wanted to make a copy of the check in
case there were any questions or issues regarding the check or transaction at
a later date.” The customer
objected. When the manager
walked toward the copy machine, the customer “tried to block her path,
grabbed her, and demanded the check back.” When the manager pulled away, the customer “began pushing
the manager, swore at her and continued to demand the check back.” Apparently at that point the manager
“tore the check in half,” while the customer “continued swearing at her, and
told her to watch her back, as she’d be waiting for her after work.” The customer was arrested for
“Assault and Battery.” 14 Mile and Stephenson, 7/27, 0320 hrs. A 27-year-old female complainant from Detroit reported that while
driving N/B on I-75 in the company of her 28-year-old male friend, also from
Detroit, she noticed her ex-boyfriend, a 40-year-old male from Detroit,
following them in a silver ’99 Dodge Stratus. She contacted the suspect via cell phone and they engaged
in an argument about the terminated status of their relationship. She exited onto W/B 14 Mile, stopping
for a red signal at Stephenson, at which point the suspect pulled along side
in the center lane. The suspect
reportedly “pointed a dark colored handgun at the complainant and her
associate.” Both claimed, “One
shot was fired, which shattered the driver’s side window.” Complainant stated “she drove off in
an attempt to flee, and ended up in the gas station lot at the S/W corner of
the intersection.” The suspect
pursued, entered the lot also, exited his vehicle and approached the female,
asking her “if she wanted to die.”
He re-entered his car and fled.
Officers located a graze mark on the front hood of the Seabring, in
addition to the shattered window.
Another witness was located who indicated he “thought the suspect
fired two shots.” Neither
occupant in the victim’s car was struck or injured. A piece of a steering wheel “Club” lock was found on the
street along with broken glass in the area where the incident took
place. An arrest warrant for the
suspect was obtained, and the Detroit Police Department was notified who
located and arrested the suspect on Saturday, 7/28 on that warrant without
incident. He was turned over to
Troy PD. The suspect, Jean
Anthony, was arraigned on Monday, 7/30/07 in Troy’s 52-4 District Court
in front of Magistrate Clement Waldmann on a multiple count warrant including
“Assault with Intent to Murder,” “Assault to do Great Bodily Harm Less than
Murder,” “Felony Firearm,” “Carrying a Concealed Weapon,” and “Discharging a
Firearm from a Vehicle.” The
suspect stood mute and a “not guilty plea” was entered on his behalf. He requested a court appointed
attorney. Bond was set at
$1,000,000.00. The Exam is set
for August 13, 2007 at 8:30 a.m. in front of Judge William Bolle in Troy
District Court. Troy
investigators are seeking additional witnesses. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or any portion
of it is asked to contact the Troy Police Department at 248-524-3477. A mug shot is attached. smashed out to allow access to lock to gain entry with laptop stolen. United Methodist
Fellowship, 4050 Coolidge, 7/22-7/26 Storage shed door locks
pried off and lawn tractor stolen. Wattles Elementary
School, 3555 Ellenboro, 7/31, 2131 hrs. Plain clothes officers responded to the area on a
report of a suspicious brown ’94 Chevy Astro Van parked in the lot. Three males exited it and climbed the
construction fence around the S/W side of the school. Shortly thereafter, the
dispatch center received reports of several burglar alarms inside the
school. Officers could see
lights inside the school briefly turn on and then back off. Three males and a female were
observed inside the school, with the female dragging a large bag of empty
returnable pop cans. When the
three males exited the construction site, officers approached and they tried
to flee on foot, however they were stopped and arrested. The female was arrested as she
emerged from the school, still in possession of the bag of cans. Entry was gained by pulling down a
piece of lumber, which supported a piece of plywood covering the entry door
leading into the area that was under construction. The cans were stolen from
the employee lounge. Arrested were three 17-year-old males and a 17-year-old
female, all from Troy. Crash Investigations: N/B I-75 south of
Maple, 7/29, 0320 hrs. Officers responded to a
single vehicle crash wherein a black ’06 Cadillac CTS left the roadway and
ended up in the center median.
Upon arrival, the 57-year-old driver from Shelby Township was found
unresponsive. He was transported
to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. According to the Oakland County
Medical Examiner’s Office, the cause of death was the result of a medical
condition and not injuries sustained in the crash. It appears the condition caused the driver to veer off the
roadway resulting in the crash.
The front seat passenger, a 56-year-old male from Shelby Township, and
the back seat passenger, a 51-year-old female from Sterling Heights sustained
minor injuries. They were also
transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. The vehicle sustained minor damage. All three were wearing
seatbelts. There was no need for
extrication. It is believed the
group was on the way home after attending a wedding. The deceased has been identified as
Raghid J. Esshaki. One lane of
northbound I-75 was closed for approximately two hours while Troy Traffic
Safety Unit personnel conducted their investigation. Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud: Complainant reported
her credit card account number was used to make two fraudulent purchases of
airline tickets on-line for a total of $1400.00. Game Stop, 420 W. 14
Mile, 7/28, 1358 hrs. Complainant reported
subject entered the store and attempted to purchase an Xbox video game with a
VISA gift card. The account
number that printed onto the receipt when the gift card was run through the
computer was that of a Master Card account in the name of a male from
California. The account numbers
did not match. When complainant
asked the subject for ID, the subject claimed he didn’t have any and
completed the purchase with cash.
Officers located and spoke to the 36-year-old male from Pontiac as he
was leaving the store. He
claimed his “wife gave him the gift card.” He also claimed that when he “tried to make the
purchase, he discovered there were not sufficient funds left on it so paid
with cash.” He stated he
“intended to leave the card behind when he was exiting the store.” He told officers he “didn’t have any
ID.” During a consent search of
the subject, his driver’s license was located. It was not the name on the Master Card account. He also was found in possession of
two VISA gift cards for $100.00 each still in their packaging, and three
American Express gift cards for $50.00 each, still in their packaging. A receipt was located in his pocket
from a hat purchase at another store for $44.51 that turned out to have been
made using the same counterfeit VISA gift card that he tried to use at Game
Stop. A representative from
another store approached officers while they were conducting their
investigation and they indicated the suspect “tried to use the same VISA card
for a purchase at his store.” He
noticed the account numbers didn’t match and declined the transaction. The suspect’s 8-year-old son, who was
in his company, was turned over to his mother who was summoned to the
scene. The suspect was arrested. Restaurant Depot, 1304
E. Maple, 7/28, 1435 hrs. Complainant reported a
customer attempted to pay for a purchase with what turned out to be a
counterfeit $50.00. The
54-year-old customer from West Bloomfield remained at the scene to speak with
responding officers. She stated
she just made a withdrawal from her bank account and believed the bill was
among the bills she received during that transaction. Complainant reported
discovering two fraudulent purchases for a total of $400.00 for music
equipment using her credit card account number. It appears the transactions
originated out of Davison. An 85-year-old female
complainant from Troy reported being contacted by phone by someone who
claimed, “to be from the Social Security Commission.” The caller told her “all senior
citizens on Social Security were going to be sent a medical card and in order
to make sure they had the right person, needed her bank, bank routing, and SS
information.” The complainant
provided it. The caller
proceeded to tell her “to send $385.00 to San Diego, and not tell anyone
about the call.” The complainant
hung up and closed all her bank accounts and credit cards. No losses as of yet. Complainant reported
someone obtained his credit account number, managed to change the billing
address to Los Angeles and made a fraudulent purchase for $824.95 from an
on-line camera store. Domestics/Family Troubles: Troy Officers responded
to six incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where
investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no
formal enforcement action was taken. Troy detectives are
investigating one report of domestic violence wherein the suspect was gone
when officers arrived. Drugs/Narcotics: Tara and Donaldson,
7/30, 2300 hrs. Officers responded to a complaint of a suspicious
white van wherein the three occupants walked to the area of Smith Middle
School. Officers located the
three subjects inside the van, which was parked on Tara near Donaldson. Investigation discovered marijuana
residue on the seat, a marijuana grinder, and marijuana pipes in the front
seat area. A small amount of marijuana
in a pillbox and a small amount of marijuana in a baggie were located under
the front seat. The subjects
admitted they “were smoking marijuana at the school.” It was determined the marijuana
belonged to the driver and front seat passenger, 18 and 19-year-old males
from Troy. They were
arrested. The other male, 18 of
Troy, who was in the rear of the van was released/not charged. Drunk/Intoxicated Driving Incidents of Interest: Woodman, 7/27, 0007
Hrs. Officers responding to
a report of a single vehicle crash located a black ’06 Cadillac CTS with
heavy damage facing west in the middle of Woodman, which runs
north/south. The vehicle had
several flat tires, heavy front-end damage, and body damage with pieces of
the vehicle hanging/falling off.
The 36-year-old male driver from Troy was not injured. He indicated he was trying to move his
friend’s car from the street into the driveway; his friend apparently left
the car while out of town. He
stated it had a manual transmission and he couldn’t get it in reverse to back
up and pull in the drive, so he had to go around the block. He stated while coming around the
curve, his foot slipped off the clutch and he lost control. Investigation indicated he left the
roadway, struck a fire hydrant breaking it off and sending it into the air
and up onto a nearby lawn, and then struck two mailboxes before coming to a
stop back in the street. He
smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and stated he “had three beers at a
concert he attended earlier.” He
failed sobriety tests and was arrested.
He blew 0.13 on a breath test. Coolidge and South
Boulevard, 7/28, 0840 hrs. Officers responded to a
report of a ’99 Pontiac Sunfire off the roadway, sitting partially in a
pond/ditch. The 57-year-old
female driver from Troy stated she “didn’t know what happened or how she
ended up in the ditch.” She was
heavily intoxicated and admitted to officers she “was drunk.” She stated she “had been drinking at
home.” She was evaluated by EMS
at the scene with no injuries.
She was too drunk to perform sobriety tests and hardly able to stand
up. She was arrested. She blew 0.31 on a breath test. A witness indicated that while
stopped at the red light for N/B Coolidge at South Boulevard, he saw the
Sunfire going in reverse at a high rate of speed across southbound Coolidge,
off road, across the sidewalk and into the ditch/pond at a high rate of
speed. Embezzlements: Home Invasions: Larcenies: Macy’s, 500 W. 14 Mile,
7/26, 1445 hrs. Complainant stated she
entered the restroom and hung her coach purse on a hook near her stall. When
she went to leave, the purse was gone.
LPO’s located a customer who indicated she thought she observed a
subject exit the restroom at about the time the incident occurred that
appeared to be carrying something, but wasn’t sure what it was. The customer stated she thought the
subject was a male. She
described him as a shorter B/M, wearing a red shirt. Construction Site, John
R and Jackson Drive, 7/13-7/27 DTE investigator
reported three electrical ground transformers with a total value of
approximately $7500.00 were stolen from the site. Gym, Faith Lutheran
Church, 7/24, 2015-2045 hrs. An 18-year-old male
complainant from Troy stated that he left his wallet on a countertop while
playing basketball. When he
returned for it, it was gone. The
next day his credit card company called regarding activity on his account
involving purchases at a fast food restaurant and several gas stations in
Sterling Heights totaling $113.44.
He confirmed the purchases were fraudulent. His bank froze the credit card account to prevent further
fraud. He was contacted later
regarding another purchase attempt that was declined due to the account being
frozen. Information was
developed indicating that two males were observed taking the wallet. #1 was described as Middle Eastern,
approximately 16-years-old, thin, 5’-6,” short dark hair. #2 was described as a W/M,
approximately 16-year- old, 5’-10”, short hair, braces. The two suspects arrived in the

Fraud Prevention:
Ø Remember that nothing that is worth
anything is free. Ø If someone that you do not know offers to
do you a favor, they probably have an ulterior motive. Ø Never give any personal information out to
an unknown source over the phone or Internet. (If someone
asks for personal information, ask to speak to his or her supervisor and
inform him or her you will be calling the Police to make a fraud report.) No reputable business will call you or email you for this
information!!! Ø If you receive a phone call or email
telling you that you have won something that you did not apply for, it is
more than likely a fraud. Ø No legitimate organization will ask for
any money or a Credit Card number in order to claim a prize Ø Protect yourself against identity theft by
shredding all documents and safe guarding your account numbers, social
security numbers and credit card numbers. Ø Always maintain your credit cards and
secure the credit card numbers. Ø If you suspect that you have been the
victim of credit fraud, call your credit card company and have them run a
query of your charges. Ø Never give your bank account
numbers over the phone. Especially if unsolicited! Identity theft continues to be
the fastest growing crime in the world, and the city of Troy is no exception.
We continually get reports of identity theft and fraud on a regular basis.
While it may not be totally avoidable,
detecting the early signs of identity theft is one of the best ways to avoid
extensive losses and damage to your credit history. If your wallet/purse etc. gets stolen,
cancel all stolen credit and ATM cards immediately. Checking your credit history regularly is
a great way to keep appraised on the status of your credit. Here are three sources for checking your
credit history: (The
titles are links to the webpages) 1-800-525-6282 1-888-397-3742 1-800-680-7289 Larcenies from Autos / Car Theft
Things that
can be done to combat auto theft and larcenies from autos include: Ø Installing a car alarm. Ø Using steering-wheel locking applications
like the club etc. Ø Applications of a hidden kill switch to
the ignition system. Ø Park in a well lit well traveled area if
possible. | ||||
