Crime Alert for period ending December 21,
2007 Altercations/Disorderly Conduct: Assaults: Somerset Collection
Lot, 2750 W. Big Beaver, 12/15, 1757 hrs. Verbal and then
physical altercation occurred over a disputed parking space. The dispute apparently arose when a Dodge
mini-van driven by a 29-year-old male from Westland allegedly pulled into a
space that a Ford Taurus driven by a 39-year-old male from Southfield had
been waiting for. A male and female passenger from the van and a female passenger
from the Taurus apparently also became involved. There was an allegation that the male
driver from Southfield pulled a handgun, racked a round and made
threats. That story changed, as did
accounts of who said and did what during the altercation. The male from Southfield had a CCW permit.
He denied the accusation about the gun, explaining he “only pulled his coat
up to show the holstered gun on his hip when he was being punched
simultaneously by the two males from the van.” An independent witness confirmed the
physical altercation between the parties occurred, but stated a gun was not
brandished. All parties were
identified and released. None appear
to want to pursue charges. A couple
very minor injuries were sustained and ice packs were provided. Complainant went to his former place of employment to
pick up an item of personal equipment he left behind. He spoke to the manager who left him
momentarily to take care of a customer.
Apparently a former co-worker saw complainant in the
work area un-escorted and told him to leave.
Complainant stated he told the subject he would after he finished his
business with the manager. He stated
the subject proceeded to push him against the shop door and eventually pushed
him out of the business. The suspect admitted
pushing the complainant out of the business when he refused to leave,
indicating he “didn’t think that was an assault.” He went on to advise the officer
if the subject returned he would engage in similar behavior. Dequindre, 12/15, 0040
hrs. A 42-year-old male
from Troy and 53-year-old male from Troy engaged in an argument that became
physical. The subjects are sometime
roommates and the dispute started over accusations that one helps himself to
“other peoples stuff” in the household without permission. Conflicting statements were filed over who
initiated the physical contact. Minor
injuries were sustained and no medical treatment required. Unknown on whether they will pursue
charges. One was transported to his
girlfriend’s home in another city for the night. Assist Other Department/Law Enforcement: Auto/Vehicle Thefts: Barnes
and Noble Lot, 396 John R, 12/18, 1830-1945 hrs. ’99 Plymouth
Breeze stolen. JC
Penney Lot, Oakland Mall, 700 W. 14 Mile, 12/18, 1815-1945 hrs. ’04
Dodge Stratus parked in lot found with ignition cylinder removed in
unsuccessful attempt to steal it. No
sign of forced entry and possibly left unlocked. Breaking and Entries: Millennium
Manufacturing, 1350 Rankin, 12/18, 1806 hrs. Complainants
working in the shop area of the business observed a light come on in an
office that was supposed to be closed.
When they went to investigate, they discovered a male subject
inside. When they asked the subject
what he was doing, the subject claimed he “was lost and gave the name of a
business in the vicinity that he was looking for.”
The complainants checked the subject for stolen goods and after finding none,
let him go on his way. Shortly
thereafter they discovered a laptop missing from the office across from where
the subject was originally observed.
Responding officers assisted complainants search the business for
it. They eventually located it
concealed in a backpack in one of the offices. The backpack contained paperwork including
a passport in the name of a 21-year-old male from Roseville. The complainants stated the photo was the
person they had confronted earlier inside the business. Another officer proceeded to the business
the subject claimed he was looking for.
A representative there stated the subject stopped by and filled out an
application. It was determined this
occurred before he entered Millennium.
The name on the application was the same 21-year-old subject as that
on the passport. A message was left
for the suspect using the phone number on the application. Shortly thereafter, the subject approached
officers and stated he “was the person they were looking for.” He stated he “was lost and wandered into
the first business where he saw the laptop and decided to steal it.” He stated when “he was discovered, he left.” He was arrested. Crash Investigations: S/B I-75 N/O Crooks, 12/14, 2244
hrs. ’06 Ford F-150 pickup left the
roadway, rolled and came to rest on the right shoulder. The 33-year-old male driver/lone occupant
from Ferndale stated he “was cut off by another vehicle which caused him to
lose control and leave the roadway.”
Independent witnesses reported seeing no involvement with another
vehicle, indicating the pickup lost control and left the roadway on its
own. The driver smelled of alcohol and
stated he “had two beers at the Pistons game earlier.” He tried some sobriety tests and
failed. He refused to participate in
additional tests. He blew 0.18 on a
PBT (Preliminary Breath Test) and was arrested. He refused to take a breath test, so a
search warrant for his blood was obtained.
He was uncooperative with paramedics attempting to take his blood so he
was transported to the hospital where the blood draw was completed and
toxicology results pending. He was not
injured in the crash.
Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and
other Fraud: Journey’s
Shoe Store, Somerset Collection, 2800 W. Big Beaver, 12/15, 2130 hrs. Store
manager discovered a counterfeit $20.00 bill while processing the till at the
end of the day. Complainant
was contacted by credit card company checking on an on-line credit card
application being submitted in his name.
He confirmed the attempt was fraudulent. When he checked his credit report he
discovered similar applications out using his personal information and was
able to stop them with no losses. Complainant
discovered several fraudulent purchases made using her credit account number. Domestics/Family Troubles: Troy Officers responded to three
incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where investigations
revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal
enforcement action taken. Drugs/Narcotics: Drunk/Intoxicated
Driving Incidents of Interest: Embezzlements: Macy’s,
500 W. 14 Mile, 11/28 and 12/1 LPO’s (Loss
Prevention Officers) initiated an investigation into a
30-year-old female employee after discovering she rang a short transaction at
her register and allowed a customer to leave with items not paid for on
11/28. On 12/1 she was observed
ringing fraudulent returns onto gift cards.
She then used the gift cards to make purchases at other Macy’s
locations. She has apparently not shown up for her last several shifts. Investigation continues. Home
Invasions: Larcenies: My
Photographer, Oakland Mall, 382 W. 14 Mile, 12/15, 1600-1700 hrs. Purse

stolen from table in locker room. Footlocker,
Oakland Mall, 412 W. 14 Mile, 12/15, 1600 hrs. Complainant
reported she set her package and her cell phone on a bench. When she returned, the package was there,
but the cell phone was gone. She asked
a male store employee about it and he denied seeing it. A witness reported observing the same male
store employee pick the cell up and take it into the rear stock room of the
store. Apparently the witness
confronted the 17-year-old male from Warren with what she observed and told
him he should return the phone.
According to her, he refused to return it. The suspect denied taking the phone when
confronted by responding officers. It
was not located. Lamb,
12/2-12/16 Snow
blower stolen from garage. No sign of
forced entry, however the machine was chained/locked to a beam. The lock had been cut. A neighbor reported seeing a suspicious
white pickup in the complainant’s drive in the recent past, but didn’t recall
the day or time. Northfield
Parkway, 12/15-12/16, 1600-1130 hrs. Complainant
reported for the second time this month that money was missing/stolen from
her residence. No sign of forced entry
either time and complainant states doors were locked. Kohl’s,
1265 Coolidge, 12/18, 2230-2300 hrs. Complainant
stated she left her purse on the floor of the fitting room while she fed her
baby. After finishing she left and
forgot her purse. When she realized
she didn’t have the purse and returned it was gone. Entertainment
Publications, 1414 E. maple, 12/17, 0900-1500 hrs. Complaint
stated she left her purse on her chair in an office cubicle and covered it with
her coat while she attended a meeting.
She received a call later that day from her bank checking on $3800.00
in purchases on her credit cards. When
she checked her purse she discovered her wallet missing. South

Chevy Avalanche parked in apartment complex lot keyed along driver’s side. Minors and Alcohol: Starr and Livernois, 12/15, 0345
hrs. Officers located a 17-year-old
female from New Baltimore standing on the corner without a coat. She was intoxicated and seemed confused
over whom officers were and she continually asked for a ride. She could hardly walk and had to be
assisted into a patrol car. She stated
she “was drinking at a party at a nearby hotel.” She couldn’t explain how she got to the
location where officers found her. She
was taken to the station where she blew 0.21 on a PBT (Preliminary Breath
Test) and was cited for MIP (Minor in Possession). Her mother was contacted and came to get
her. Officers proceeded to the hotel
and found no evidence of a party. Isabel and John R, 12/16, 0250 hrs. Officers found a van parked in the
area and two subjects out on foot running between houses. They were eventually located. They were a 16-year-old female from Fraser
and a 17-year-old male from Sterling Heights.
They explained they “got into a verbal dispute with their friends
inside the van, so got out and were heading to the male’s apartment in
Sterling Heights.” Both had been drinking.
The male blew 0.06 on a PBT, the female blew 0.08. The van was found unoccupied but two
additional subjects were found on foot in the area. They were a 16-year-old female from
Sterling Heights and an 18-year-old female from Clinton Twp. They stated they
“were looking for their friends.” Both
smelled of alcohol. They blew 0.06 and
0.12 on PBT’s respectively. The four
subjects stated they “were at a party on Isabel.” The location was checked and the party was
over. All four were transported to the
station, cited for MIP and rides home arranged. The 16-year-old’s parents could not be
located. She was sent home with another
of the subject’s parents. Neighbor Troubles: Complainant reported neighboring
business pushed snow onto his property which resulted in him having to have
his snow re-plowed. Businesses
involved apparently have disputed the property line with each other in the
past. Responsible business owner
warned on ordinance pertaining to depositing snow on other’s property. Peace
Officer/Civil: Phone Calls/Harassment/Threats: One
telephone threats report taken and one phone harassment report taken. Retail Fraud: Victoria’s Secret, Oakland Mall, 412
W. 14 Mile, 12/13-12/14, 0700-0700 hrs. 12 bottles of perfume with a total
value of $588.00 discovered missing from a display. Macy’s,
500 W. 14 Mile, 12/17, 1453 hrs. Plain
clothes officers observed an occupied maroon Dodge Caravan without a license
plate in the lot. The male driver
entered the jewelry and perfume department of Macy’s and then left without
looking at merchandise or making any purchases. He walked past the car in the lot, crossed
14 Mile and was headed toward Jared Jewelry Store when a marked security
vehicle drove by. He immediately
turned around, walked south on John R to McDonald’s. After purchasing some food, he walked to
and entered two different gas stations at the 14 Mile and John R
intersection. He purchased tin foil
from one of the gas stations and then returned to the car. Shortly thereafter, a female occupant from
the car exited, entered Macy’s, went to the jewelry department and palmed a
small box containing a necklace and charm.
She proceeded to the fur department where she was observed handling
fur headbands. The fur department manager
discovered two headbands missing from inventory that had not been sold after
the female left the department. She
exited the store without making any purchases. Rather than returning to the van, she
walked to the east end of the lot
where the van pulled up and picked her up.
A marked police unit attempted to stop the van on the S/B entrance
ramp to I-75 from W/B 14 Mile. The
vehicle initially pulled over, however sped away as the officer walked up to
it. The officer did not pursue,
however several plain clothes officers in plain cars that were monitoring
followed the suspect vehicle as it proceeded south on I-75. It eventually exited the freeway at 8 Mile
and pulled into a turn around lane.
When it did, the officers surrounded it with their cars, preventing it
from moving. The 22-year-old male
driver from Detroit was arrested for fleeing the traffic stop and driving on
a suspended license. The 49-year-old
male passenger from Highland Park was released. The 19-year-old female passenger from Detroit
who had been observed inside Macy’s was found wearing the stolen charm and
necklace. The box they had been in was
recovered from her jacket pocket. The
charm was still in its plastic shipping covering. Two stolen fur headbands from Macy’s were recovered
from inside the backpack she was wearing.
She was arrested for retail fraud.
Officers recovered metal, glass and steel crack pipes from her purse. Robberies: Suspicious Incidents: Achatz Pie, 1063 E. Long Lake,
12/14, 0800 hrs. Complainant reported a male subject
has been in the business three times over the last week at opening time. He asked for coffee the first time; to use
the bathroom the second and coffee again the third. He was advised the first time that coffee
is not sold. He appeared to be looking
all around the store and paying particular attention to their surveillance
system. The third time the subject was
inside the store, a witness spotted him walking south across Long Lake after
he left the store. The store is located
in a plaza on the north side. He was
observed entering a black ’05 Ford pickup parked in a lot on the south side
of Long Lake. The vehicle registers
to a 37-year-old male from Warren and the owner’s description matches the subject: w/m, 6’, 200 lbs. Midtown Square Lot, Coolidge and
Maple, 12/14, 2100 hrs. A 54-year-old female complainant
from Rochester came to the station to report that while loading her packages
into her car, she noticed a white Buick 4 door occupied by a male pull into a
space across the aisle facing her. She
stated he appeared to be watching her.
She stated as she entered and
started her vehicle, the male exited his still running vehicle, leaving his
door partially open. She stated it
appeared he was walking toward and reaching for her passenger side door. She placed her car in reverse and began
backing, which activated her door locks.
She stated at that point the subject returned to his car, half
running, entered, and drove away. She
stated she last saw him going north on Coolidge. Subject:
W/M, approximately 30-years-old, 5’-8,” thin, brown hair, blue jeans,
dark blue jacket, dark cap, wire glasses.
Partial plate on the Buick was “JGL”. TCF Bank Lot, 2138 E. Big Beaver,
12/12, 1900 hrs. Officers responded to a report of a
suspicious occupied vehicle off by itself in the far west part of the
lot. The black ’98 Olds 4 door was
occupied by a 58-year-old male from Sterling Heights. He had his pants
unbuckled, his zipper down and was watching a pornographic movie on a DVD
player. He denied engaging in any lewd
behavior. Traffic Altercations: Rochester
and Big Beaver, 12/14, 1645 hrs. A 41-year-old
male from Southfield came to the station to report while stopped at a red
light in the turn around lane from N/B Rochester to S/B Rochester just
north of Big Beaver, the light turned green and he was slow to start out when
the vehicle behind him began honking its horn. The male driver began swearing at him and
gave him the middle finger.
Complainant went south and stopped for the red signal in the right
turn lane for W/B Big Beaver. The
vehicle from the turn around lane came up and stopped behind him. The male driver exited and approached
complainant’s vehicle yelling obscenities and making threatening
remarks. According to the complainant,
the subject called him a terrorist and made some comment about a “bullet in
the head.” Complainant stated the
subject invited him to pull over into a nearby parking lot “so he could show
him who he was.” Complainant claimed
the subject produced some kind of badge, claiming he was a police
officer. He stated the badge appeared
to be silver and in some kind of folding case. Complainant stated when the light turned
green, he completed his right turn and proceeded W/B. The subject returned to his car and
eventually pulled along side of him yelling and telling him to pull over.
Complainant stated the subject continued following him until the complainant
entered a turn around lane west of Livernois.
At that point the subject continued W/B and complainant lost sight of
him. Subject described as a W/M,
approximately 40-years-old, 5’-9,” 200 lbs., short straight red hair, balding
in front, thin mustache, medium build, light complexion, wearing black jeans
and an orange turtle neck sweater with a shirt underneath. The subject was driving a red Saturn
station wagon with a white State of Michigan plate with the first two letters
“PD.” Complainant stated attached to the left corner of the plate was a “blue
star.” Vandalism: Weapons
