Altercations/Disorderly Conduct:

Assaults:

Assist Other Department/Law Enforcement:

Squirrel Hill, 2/24, 1705 hrs.

Complainant stated a neighbor knocked on his door to alert him that his garage door was on fire.  Complainant stated he left a garbage can in front of the garage for pick-up.  The fire appeared to have originated as a result of the contents of that container being started on fire.  The responding police officer was able to extinguish most of the flames on the garage door and the FD put out the remaining flames just inside the garage.  Garage door sustained damage.  Limited fire/smoke damage inside garage.

4000 block of Rochester, 2/24, 1100 hrs.

A 48-year-old male complainant from Troy indicated he got off work the night before, drove home and parked his car in the driveway.  When he woke up he reportedly discovered the ’00 GMC Sonoma gone.  A computer query on the plate led to information from Pontiac PD that it had been involved in a hit-and-run crash there earlier that morning with a parked car.  The complainant’s damaged vehicle had been left unattended at the scene.  The Troy investigating officer detected an odor of intoxicants on the complainant’s breath and briefed him on the consequences of filing a false police report (a felony).  He then explained he went to a bar in Pontiac after work, had three glasses of wine, left the bar, got lost and crashed into a parked car.  He stated he called a friend on his cell that picked him up and drove him home.  He blew .06 on a PBT at the time of this report.  Case turned over to Pontiac PD.

Auto/Vehicle Thefts:

Chanterell, 2/26-2/27, 2300-0900 hrs.

A ’05 Dodge Ram pickup parked on the street was stolen.

Red Roof Inn, 2350 Rochester, 2/27, 1200 hrs.

Complainant noticed an unoccupied Ford stake truck parked in the lot over two days and contacted the company listed thereon to learn that it had been stolen in Warren last weekend.  Owner responded and recovered the truck.

Breaking and Entries:

Crash Investigations:

South Boulevard between Sheldrake and Westpointe, 3/1, 0930 hrs.

Troy PD, FD, and Alliance EMS responded to a report of a single car, serious injury crash.  Investigation revealed a ’96 Mercury Cougar that was E/B on South Blvd. and driven by a 19-year-old female from Troy skidded off the roadway, slid sideways and crashed into a utility pole on the south side of the road.  Point of impact was at the driver’s side door.  The Troy FD had to extricate the lone occupant/driver.  She was initially responsive at the scene, however became unresponsive during the rescue operation.  She was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.  The driver was wearing a seatbelt.  Officers at the scene reported finding a snow/rain/sleet mix of precipitation falling during the investigation.  The roadway was slippery.  South Blvd. between Sheldrake and Westpointe was closed for approximately 2 hours in both directions during the crash investigation.

Crooks and Bridge Park, 2/28, 1616 hrs.

Troy PD, Fire, and Alliance EMS responded to a report of a serious injury crash.  Investigation revealed a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van traveling S/B on Crooks swerved off the roadway striking a utility pole and then a tree.  The 73-year-old male driver from Bloomfield Hills - Mr. William Welch Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene.    His 72-year-old wife, who was the front seat and only other passenger of the vehicle was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.  It is believed the driver suffered a medical condition prior to the crash.  Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be factors.  The weather was cold however the pavement was clear and dry.  Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts.  The Troy FD had to remove the door to gain access to and assist in removing the driver.  The investigation required both directions of Crooks Road to be closed with N/B Crooks re-opened at 1715 hrs. and S/B Crooks re-opened at 1930 hrs.

John R and Tucker, 3/2, 0156 hrs.

Officers responded to the scene of a single vehicle crash wherein a black ’00 Jeep Cherokee left the roadway, hit a mailbox and then went into the ditch sideways, striking and breaking a utility pole.  As officers pulled up, the 50-year-old male driver from Rochester was still behind the wheel, spinning the rear tires, trying to get the stuck and badly damaged vehicle out of the muddy ditch.  He smelled strongly of intoxicants and stated he had “three beers.”  His speech was slurred and he was unable to maintain his balance.  He blew .18 on a preliminary breath test and was advised he was under arrest.  A vial containing a small amount of cocaine was recovered from the driver’s side floor.  The vile had some blood on it.  The driver had several cuts as a result of the crash.  A cocaine spoon/snorter was recovered from between the driver’s side floorboard and driver’s side door.  He claimed the cocaine was not his, denied using it and indicated there was someone else in the car earlier.  He had what appeared to be minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.  There he agreed to take a blood test. He was released to the hospital with toxicology results/charges pending.

Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud:

Ram’s Horn, 2940 Rochester, 1/30, 0057 hrs.

Complainant stated suspect ordered $9.31 in food for which he represented he didn’t have enough money to pay.  He stated he would return the next day to make good on the bill.  He provided his MI driver’s license as ID.  The 27-year-old male from Warren has not returned.  Attempts to contact him by phone have not been successful.  Officer was able to learn the suspect may have a drug problem and was recently kicked out of his residence for stealing from that location.

Rite Aid, 1981 W. South Blvd., 2/23, 1900 hrs.

Complainant reported receiving a prescription request for a narcotic drug via phone.  When complainant contacted the issuing doctor’s office to confirm he discovered the prescription had not been issued/authorized by the doctor in question and was a fraud attempt.

Complainant reported receiving an email from an individual claiming to be a textile company representative offering to send him $3500.00 in traveler’s checks that he was to cash, keep 10% and then wire the rest in cash to an account in Great Britain.  Complainant stated he responded that he was interested and eventually received additional instructions to make the wire transfer to an individual in Kenya and not Great Britain.  The checks arrived at his residence, but concerned over the wire transfer change he made additional contacts with the site questioning the arrangements.  He was told to send the checks back but given a new address to do so, which was in Indiana.  He brought them to the PD where they were verified as counterfeit American Express Traveler’s checks by a bank fraud investigator who the investigating officer contacted.  They were in $500.00 denominations.  No loss.

Complainant reported discovering an old/overdue satellite TV bill that someone had fraudulently opened in complainant’s name and had billed to an address in Detroit with which complainant is not familiar.

Complainant stated he received a cell call from a female claiming to be a representative from one of his credit card company’s trying to obtain his mother’s maiden name.  Apparently earlier she had either confirmed or obtained his name, social security number and work phone from him.  When he followed up with the issuing bank they advised an unknown person tried to have the address changed on his account but failed because they didn’t have his mother’s maiden name to confirm the change.  He was contacted later by an account representative from a store asking to verify he was opening a new account, as someone tried to open one in his name via the Internet.  He confirmed the attempt was a fraud.  No apparent losses yet.

Nordstrom and Marshall Field’s, Somerset Collection, 1/31-2/21

Complainant ordered new personal checks via the mail, which never arrived.  During an ATM transaction she discovered her account was overdrawn.  When she went to her bank she discovered two purchases were made at Nordstrom totaling approximately $365.00 and one at Marshall Field’s totaling $150.00 using three checks from the personal check order that she never received.  She placed stop payments on the remaining checks and bank credited her account for the forged checks.

Troy Party Store, 2/7, 1600 hrs.

Complainant reported suspect cashed a personal check made out to himself from a third party, with the third party’s endorsement/signature affixed for $210.00 that came back “no-account.”  Apparently before complainant received notice from the bank on the above incident he had allowed the same subject to cash several other personal checks that belonged to a third party but were made out to the store and endorsed/signed by the suspect.  The suspect/signer/passer is different from the account holder listed on those checks.  They eventually came back “non-sufficient funds.”  Officer contacted the account holder on the “no-account” check who confirmed her checks had been stolen.  In addition she advised that the account holder on the second set of checks passed by suspect was her roommate.  Roommate has not been contacted as of yet to determine if his checks were also stolen. Suspect is a 24-year-old male from Menominee, MI.

Complainant came to the station and reported a check made out to her that she received from a car sale for approximately $2600.00 dated 2/9/07 had been stolen and fraudulently cashed at a bank in Troy on 2/12/07.  She stated she left it under the visor of her car and hadn’t noticed it missing until 2/27/07.  She obtained and provided a photocopy of the cashed check from the issuing car dealership.  When inspected the officer noted it was bank stamped as received on 2/9/07 with a paid date of 2/12/07.  It contained an endorsement on the back that closely resembled complainant’s signature.

Crime Prevention Tips

Suspicious Incidents / people

If it appears that someone is up to no-good, they probably are.  Call the Police immediately.  We are trained to investigate suspicious circumstances and determine if criminal activity is afoot.

The best security system that you can have is a “Nosy Neighbor.”  Encourage your neighbors to be “Nosy,” especially if there is strange activity around your property.  Return the favor by keeping a watchful eye on their property and reporting it immediately.  This is the basis for the Neighborhood Watch program.

If someone or something seems “suspicious” to you or makes you feel uncomfortable, there is probably good reason for it.  Don’t get into the habit of second-guessing your intuition and instinct.

Sexual predators are usually progressive, starting out with public exposure and leading to more risky and dangerous behaviors. You can check the state of Michigan registered sex offenders list at www.mipsor.state.mi.us for offenders that live in your area.

Alcohol / Drugs

Be responsible, if you drink, DO NOT DRIVE!

If you serve alcohol, make sure that your guests make it home safely.

Don’t serve alcohol to under aged children

We all must share the roads, don’t risk the lives of others or yourself.  It is not a good idea to mix Alcohol with other activities like boating or swimming.  If you drink, do it in moderation and don’t drive or put yourself and other at risk.

·        DO NOT use illegal drugs

·        DO NOT drive and endanger the lives of everyone if you have consumed alcohol or drugs.

·        If you are under 21 years of age, IT IS ILLEGAL to consume or possess alcohol.

If you have any information on illegal drug activity call our tip line at 248-524-0777.

Larceny

Ø      Always keep control of all your property.

Ø      Your belongings are not safe while you are playing sports or at work unless you have them properly locked or are in possession of them.

Ø      Thieves wait for the right time and will take property quickly.

Ø      Unfortunately you cannot always trust co-workers or other business associates.

Ø      Do not rely on others to watch your belongings.  If they fail, you will be the victim, not them.

Ø      Be cautious of who you allow into your home. If you invite guests that you really do not know into your home you are inviting trouble.
