Crime Alert for period ending March 23, 2007 Altercations/Disorderly Conduct: Kensington Church, 1825 E. Square Lake, 3/11, 1330 hrs. Officers responded to a report of three subjects picketing the church
on the sidewalk along John R.
Members of the same group had been picketing the week before, had
allegedly been on church property, were advised by officers of trespassing
laws and directed to remain on public right of ways if they wished to
picket. On 2/18 members of the
same group entered and disrupted a service inside the church “yelling and
screaming that the church was misleading its members.” Their behavior apparently disturbed
numerous attendees to the point that they left the church out of fear of an impending
incident. Church representatives
approached the group at that time, and they remained argumentative during the
contact and did eventually leave.
Misdemeanor arrest warrants for “Disorderly Conduct” have been
authorized by the Troy City Attorney’s Office against a 21-year-old male from
Sterling Heights and a 26-year-old female from Riverside, California as a
result of the disturbance they created inside the church on 2/18. On 3/11 officers determined the
group had not entered church property and were legally on the public sidewalk
protesting within the law.
Officers spoke to the individual who purportedly was the group’s
leader. He is a 36-year-old male
from Sterling Heights. He
advised they were aware of the picketing laws and were being conscious not to
violate them. He stated he just
wanted to get his message out that “what the people attending the church were
being taught is false.” The
group left without incident. The
members of the group against whom the warrants have been issued have been
contacted and advised by TPD to turn themselves in on the warrants. Assaults: Assist Other Department/Law Enforcement: 14 Mile east of Dequindre, Sterling Hgts., 3/16, 1600 hrs. Troy plain-clothes officers proceeded to the area on a report issued
from Sterling Heights PD that a 28-year-old male involved in possibly
stealing a family vehicle had returned it, but was last seen leaving the area
on foot. Troy officers located him on foot in the area and assisted SHPD take
him into custody. Auto/Vehicle Thefts: Livernois and Regents,
3/15, 1442 hrs. Officer observed a
white Pontiac Aztec driving with a March 2007 expiration tab affixed to the
plate. A computer query on the
plate indicated the vehicle was stolen out of Royal Oak. As officer followed it the vehicle
made an abrupt turn into a gas station parking lot, parked and the male
driver began to walk away.
Officers detained him. He
had the keys and indicated the vehicle belonged to his ex-fiancée and he had
failed to return it to her.
He was arrested. Apartment Complex, Pond Ridge, 3/17, 0252 hrs. Complainant reported two B/M’s were attempting to steal his ’95 Buick
Regal and had fled on foot.
Officers located a coat hanger stuck in the doorframe of the vehicle.
Complainant stated a relative’s older Pontiac Bonneville was stolen from the
same general area on Pond Ridge two weeks ago. Footprints in the snow leading away from the Regal
ended at a residence in the same complex. Attempts to get an answer at the door were
unsuccessful. When a dispatcher
called the residence and advised the person who answered the phone it was the
police department the subject immediately hung up. Investigation continues. Detroit, 3/21, 1220 hrs. DPD reported recovering a ’02 Ford F250 pickup in their town
originally reported stolen in Troy on 3/17. Ignition punched, tailgate damaged and vehicle
identification missing. Detroit PD, 3/14, 3/15, and 3/17 DPD reported recovering the following vehicles in their city that were
reported stolen from Troy: ’01 Dodge Caravan stolen on 3/4 - ignition and lock damage; collision
damage. ’00 Dodge Intrepid stolen 3/7 – ignition and lock damage with
collision damage. ’01 Dodge Intrepid
stolen 3/12 – ignition and lock damage; collision damage. Breaking and
Entries:
Crash
Investigations: Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud: Taco Bell, 3268
Rochester, 3/5, 1800 hrs. Complainant stated a
drive through customer driving a burgundy colored vehicle paid with what
turned out to be a counterfeit $20.00. Complainant reported
discovering her cell phone was some how cloned and is being used by a
21-year-old male from Warren. Complainant discovered
her checking account overdrawn by $2200.00. When she went to the bank they indicated they discovered a
fraudulent check made out to her for $2200.00 that contained her
endorsement. She stated she did
not cash or endorse the check.
Complainant reported
discovering an unauthorized $700.00 deposit into his bank account, followed
up by a $3600.00 electronic check withdrawal. Unknown on source of fraud and the bank is investigating. A 52-year-old male
complainant from Troy came to the station to report that he received an email
from a subject claiming to be a CEO of a company that was looking for a
payment agent in the U.S. who would collect funds from customers in the
states and wire/transfer the monies to the company in London for a 10%
commission. He filled out an
application and was called shortly thereafter by another individual who
advised the first shipment was on the way and it was necessary for
complainant to process this transaction as soon as possible. He was directed to deposit the funds
in his account and then wire cash via Western Union to a location in
London. He received 5 American
Express Gift Cheques of $500.00 each via UPS with a return address to an
individual in Oklahoma. When he
tried to cash them his bank would not allow him to, as he didn’t have enough
money in his account. He called
his contact person who instructed him to open a new joint account in his and
the company’s name. He did so
and deposited the checks. He was
initially directed to wire the cash to London, but re-contacted by email with
instructions to wire the money to an individual in Lagos, Nigeria. He was to keep 10% commission himself
and leave $100.00 in the account.
He completed the transaction as directed. His bank later advised him the checks were fraudulent and
he was liable for the monies, his personal account was frozen and he was
advised he’d be turned over to collection at the bank if he didn’t repay the
balance of the funds. Soon after
he got a voice mail from an individual claiming to be a Nigerian Government
official advising the party to whom he wired the money was a scammer and not
to send any more money. Another
individual called advising he was the Finance Minister of Nigeria informing
him they were holding the money that he had wired and if he’d send a fee of
$1850.00 they would release the funds to him but he’d have to come to Nigeria
in person to pick up the funds.
He got a similar call from an individual claiming to be from the
Office of the President of Nigeria.
He emailed his original contact, explaining the entire experience and
requested his money back. The
person responded that he’d refund his money and asked him where to send
it. He supplied the information
but the money did not arrive.
Additional emails to the contact person requesting the monies be
returned were met with a response by email similar to the original,
congratulating him for joining the company and hoping for a long-term
business relationship. Complainant reported
one of her personal checks was apparently stolen, forged and cashed for
$200.00. The person that it was
written out to and cashed it is apparently an associate of one of
complainant’s teenaged kids and has been inside her home. Domestics/Family Troubles: Complainant reported
that while she and her 27-year-old daughter were visiting at a relative’s
house she noticed her car keys missing from her purse. When she checked her daughter and the
vehicle were gone. She suspected
her daughter took the car to buy drugs, as there is an apparent history of
drug use. She contacted the PD
the following day to report her daughter returned the vehicle. She is considering prosecution. Complainant reported
her 18-year-old son took her car without permission and suspected he was out
trying to purchase drugs. She stated it has happened in the past but he
usually returns with it the same day. Officers responded to a
domestic assault report wherein victim fled the residence. Officers were unable to locate the
suspect. Investigation
continues. Complainant reported
15-year-old daughter had run away.
This appears to be an on-going problem. Complainant suspects drug use
may be involved. Entered in
computer system as missing. Troy Officers responded
to six incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where
investigations revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no
formal enforcement action taken/required. Drugs/Narcotics: Rochester and Long
Lake, 3/18, 2340 hrs. Officer stopped a
vehicle for a traffic violation.
The 20-year-old male driver from Troy had a marijuana pipe with a
small amount of marijuana inside in a cup holder, in the center console. He was cited for “Possession of
Marijuana and Paraphernalia” and released at the scene. Drunk/Intoxicated Driving Incidents of Interest: Stalwart, 3/15, 0304
hrs. Officers responded to a
report of a suspicious vehicle stopped and running for an extended period of
time with the lights on in front of a residence. Officers located a gold ’97 Olds Cutlass in the street,
running and occupied by an 18-year-old male from Troy. He was passed out and it took several
attempts to rouse him. He had a
baggie of marijuana in his lap and smelled strongly of intoxicants. He claimed he was “on his way home
from a friend’s house where he had consumed a couple beers,” but when asked
was not aware of “where he was” and thinking he “was at Livernois and Square
Lake.” He failed sobriety tests and was arrested for “Drunk Driving” and
“Possession of Marijuana.” He
blew 0.19 on a breath test. Livernois and Webb,
3/16, 0132 hrs. Officer observed a
maroon ’04 Chevy Monte Carlo driving northbound in the south bound curb lane
of Livernois at a high rate of speed.
Officer stopped the car.
The 26-year-old female driver from Auburn Hills stated she “didn’t
know why she was being stopped, as she had done nothing wrong.” She claimed she “was driving on the
correct side of the road and denied speeding.” While speaking to her, the officer could smell the odor of
intoxicants, as well as marijuana.
She was confused and disoriented. She stated she and her passenger were coming from a party
but she “didn’t know where the party was.” Her 27-year-old male passenger from Farmington Hills
stated the “party was in the area of 15 Mile and Rochester.” She failed sobriety tests, but blew
only 0.01 on a PBT (Preliminary Breath Test). She was arrested for “Driving Under the Influence of
Marijuana.” A baggie of
marijuana was located inside her purse.
During booking another baggie of marijuana was located in her
clothing. (Total marijuana
confiscated approximately 17 grams.)
Toxicology tests for blood pending. N/B I-75 near Coolidge,
3/20, 1919 hrs. Officers responded to
the area in response to a cell phone caller reporting a ’96 green Jeep
Cherokee driving erratically. An
officer located it and observed it swerving back and forth. It did not immediately stop when the
officer activated his emergency equipment. When it did, it stopped partially in the right lane and
partially on the shoulder. Upon
speaking with the 37-year-old male driver from Detroit the officer could
smell a strong odor of intoxicants.
The driver’s speech was slurred, he could not follow directions,
indicated he had been drinking, as well as taken some pain relief medication
but could not recall what that was.
He failed sobriety tests and refused to take a preliminary breath
test. His license has been
revoked since 2000 for prior substance abuse convictions. He was arrested. A search warrant for his blood was
obtained. During the blood draw
he indicated he was taking Vicodin.
Toxicology is pending for drugs and alcohol. He has three prior convictions for drunk driving and one
for driving on a suspended license. N/B I-75 near Wattles,
3/21, 2016 hrs. Officers responded to
the area in response to several cell phone callers reporting a red ’90 Ford
pickup swerving as it drove along. An officer located it and observed it
weaving between two lanes nearly striking other vehicles as it did. The officer stopped it. The 29-year-old male driver from
Brighton denied drinking however indicated he was taking several prescription
medications. His speech was
slurred and he was unable to maintain his balance. He failed sobriety tests. He blew 0.00 on a preliminary breath test. He was arrested for “Driving Under
the Influence of Drugs.” A blood
test was obtained. Toxicology is
pending. During booking several
unidentified pills were recovered from his person, as was a small amount of
marijuana. Embezzlements: Macy’s, 500 W. 14 Mile,
3/21, 1625 hrs. LPO’s (Loss Prevention
Officers) noticed a 20-year-old male employee from Shelby Twp. had rung up
several refunds on his register over the last two months for items without
receipts for approximately $2200.00.
On 3/21 they observed him remove two receipts from his lap top case
and use them to ring up two fraudulent refunds, crediting his friend’s credit
account for approximately $850.00 in total. He attempted a third refund however the register refused
it. He was detained by LPO’s and admitted the fraud. Prosecution pending. Home Invasions: Shoreline, 3/15, 2140 hrs. Complainant stated she
came home to observe a male crawling under the garage door, which was
slightly open. He apparently
entered the residence through the unlocked pedestrian door leading inside
from the garage. Her father was
inside, so she tried to telephone him and started sounding the car horn. At that point the suspect fled out of
the front door of the residence.
Complainant exited her vehicle and gave chase but was unable to catch
up. She returned to the house
and got her father, as well as his pistol. (Both have CCW permits.) When they went back outside, she observed a GM “diesel
truck” driving away from the residence.
She and her father got into her car and tried to catch up to the
vehicle but were not successful.
Nothing damaged and nothing missing from residence. Suspect: W/M, in his teens, 5-9, 180, brown hair, wearing a brown
hooded sweatshirt, khaki pants, and brown New Balance shoes. Complainant didn’t report the
incident until the following day. Larcenies: Streamview, 3/15-3/17 Complainant reported
someone entered his open garage and took a 30 pack of beer and 24 pack of
Vodka coolers. Denise, 3/15-3/16,
1900-1600 hrs. Three bronze solar
lanterns stolen from in front of residence. Boyd, 3/13-3/14,
2300-0900 hrs. Complainant stated he
had a couple friends at his residence, which he shares with his
grandmother. Shortly thereafter,
Holly PD advised him that they had his grandmother’s credit card, birth
certificate and one of the subjects that had been at his house - a
23-year-old male from Holly who apparently had the items. When he spoke to his grandmother she
stated she suspected some of her jewelry might also have been stolen, as her
credit card was located in her jewelry box. Troy obtained a copy of the Holly PD report, which
indicated the subject’s mother turned the property into them, which she found
at her address. Also with the
credit card and birth certificate was a pawnshop receipt, reinforcing the
suspicion the subject may have stolen and pawned some of complainant’s
grandmother’s jewelry. The
subject’s mother turned the property in at Holly during the course of
reporting that her son had stolen her car. She indicated she suspected he was using the stolen items
to purchase drugs. She also
reported her son had contacted her other son asking him to cash a check for
$7000.00 that he had from the original complainant’s grandmother. That request was refused. Investigation continues. Bally’s, 203 E. Big
Beaver, 3/19, 2115-2145 hrs. Coat stolen from

returned to the building and when she arrived with the second chair,
discovered the front driver’s side window smashed out and her purse
stolen. One of her credit cards

Quill Creek and Norton, 3/15-3/16, 1630-0740 hrs. Complainant stated
someone removed the oil “dipstick” from a piece of construction equipment and
wrapped it around the hydraulic hose and driveshaft. When the equipment was started up the
rotation of the dipstick on the drive shaft caused damage to the engine. Lovington, 3/17, 1930
hrs. Complainant heard a
loud noise in the vicinity of his front window and when he checked discovered
the window broken by an unknown object. Orpington, 3/7-3/18,

appears a baseball bat or rock was used. Minors and Alcohol: Woodside, 3/17, 2239
hrs. Another PD contacted
Troy regarding a possible party being held at an apartment wherein the
mother/resident was going to be hosting/providing alcohol to minors. Officer checking the area located a
vehicle occupied by three young females parked nearby. As the officer
approached an 18-year-old female passenger from Warren tossed a cup containing
beer out the window. She refused
to take a PBT and was issued a citation for the refusal as well as “Minor in
Possession of Alcohol (MIP).”
All three admitted drinking alcohol. All three stated they left their ID’s inside the residence
in question. Officers proceeded
to that apartment and made contact with the 45-year-old female tenant. Officers observed several other young
people in the kitchen as well as open beer cans and alcoholic drinks. The 45-year-old female tenant
explained she was having a birthday party for her son and his friends. She pointed out none of them would be
drinking and driving and that several were spending the night. Officers explained she still could
not provide alcohol to minors even in her own home. PBT’s were administered to everyone under 21. Several were under the 0.02 blood
alcohol content enforcement level.
A 17-year-old female from Warren blew 0.05 and was cited for MIP. The resident was cited for
“Furnishing Alcohol to Minors.”
Parents were contacted. Troy Lanes, 1950 E.
Square Lake, 3/16, 2326 hrs. Officer on patrol noticed two vehicles running in
the lot. There were beer cans
scattered around one of the vehicles and it appeared someone urinated on one
of its rear tires. Upon
approaching the officer made contact with a 45-year-old female in one of the
cars and her 16-year-old son, who was behind the wheel of the other. In the car he was sitting in the
officer could see an open beer and a marijuana bong. The female explained her 18-year-old
son took the car without her permission and she was there with her other
16-year-old to retrieve it.
Officer accompanied her into the bowling alley and located the
18-year-old and his five associates.
They were requested to take PBT’s due to the alcohol and four registered
below the 0.02 enforcement level, however the 18-year-old son registered 0.05
and was cited and released for ”MIP.”
A 16-year-old male from Troy also registered 0.05. He was transported to the station,
juvenile petitions for “MIP” initiated against him and he was turned over to
his parents. Neighbor Troubles: Peace Officer/Civil: Complainant reported
terminated employee was refusing to leave the premises. When police were called, subject
departed. Phone Calls/Harassment/Threats: Two threatening call report taken. Three harassment report taken. Retail Fraud: Limited Too, 2800 W.

and on a display table near the front of the store were missing/stolen. None had been sold. Total: $1454.50. Nieman Marcus, 2705 W.
Big Beaver, 3/16, 1914 hrs. LPO’s (Loss Prevention
Officers) observed a 17-year-old male from Warren take off his own scarf and
replace it with a Hermes scarf ($475.00) that he had taken from a
display. He then zipped up his
coat and put his own scarf over the concealed scarf. He then lifted up the front of his
coat and concealed a Dolce and Gabbana hat ($275.00) in his waistband. He left the store without
paying and was detained, turned over to Troy officers and booked for “Retail
Fraud.” After he posted his bond
he approached the desk officer in the Troy PD lobby and claimed that he was
shopping with his dad when he asked his dad for the keys to the Mercedes so
he could retrieve some lip balm.
He stated he went to the car which was parked in the parking
structure, retrieved the balm and was approached from behind by two male
subjects who ordered him not to turn around, stay where he was and to turn
over his wallet. He claimed they
ordered him to get the hat his dad was trying on and the Hermes scarf. He stated he then went into the store
returned the keys to his father and stole the items as directed. Officer advised subject to write everything
down on a witness statement as well as indicated he would review all the CCTV
tapes from the parking garage.
Officer proceeded to speak with subject’s parents. When officer looked into the
interview room where he had left the subject, he noticed the subject was
holding his head in his hands and crying. The subject exited the room and stated, “I did it!” and
admitted the story about the robbery was made up. Robberies: Suspicious Incidents: Gatesford Circle, 3/17,
1800-1930 hrs. Complainant noticed a
second floor bedroom window screen opened. No apparent attempt to enter home made. Complainant feels
this occurred when they were not home.
Access to window only possible from roof. Finch and Wattles,
3/15, 1435 hrs. A 15-year-old female
reported noticing a white cargo work van present in the area of her bus
stop. She was concerned it
followed her home last Thursday.
On 3/15, she noticed it turn right from N/B Crooks onto E/B Wattles as
it has for the past four days.
It appears in the vicinity of the bus stop just as she gets off the
bus. On 3/15 she observed it slow down as she walked by. It then made a “U-turn” and passed by
again. The van pulled into a
driveway just east of her house and appeared to be watching as she walked by
and entered her residence. She
feels the driver is “staring her down,” and indicated it appears he sometimes
“makes faces” at her. He has not attempted to lure her to the vehicle, spoken
to her or otherwise approached her.
Driver: W/M, 30’s, shaved
head or very short hair, large muscular frame, wearing dark sunglasses. Vehicle: White, work style cargo van, driver’s and passenger side
front door windows, two windows on the rear doors. Falcon, 3/21, 1230 hrs. Complainant stated a
subject knocked on her door claiming to be from “AT & T, needing access
to her home as a result of a service call.” Complainant hadn’t made a service call, saw no AT & T
truck and the subject was not wearing a uniform so complainant refused
entry. He showed her some kind
of AT & T badge/identification card. He stated he’d be outside working on the phone lines. Some time later he approached again
asking if she had phone service. Complainant told him she did and he
left. Complainant’s daughter
advised complainant’s service is not through AT & T. Subject: W/M, 25-30 years, blue jeans and a white shirt. Traffic
Altercations: Vandalism: Weapons Offenses: Welfare Checks: Special Events

3/15, 1200 hrs. Officer stopped a black
’01 Mercedes for speeding. The
34-year-old male driver from Troy was arrested on outstanding warrants from
another jurisdiction. An
unloaded .45 caliber pistol with magazine was recovered from the glove
box. Subject claimed he “had a
CCW permit for it.”
Investigation determined his CCW permit had been revoked and he had
been notified of that revocation.
He was also charged with “Carrying a Concealed Weapon without a Valid
Permit.” A properly cased, unloaded semi-auto AR15 rifle was found in the
trunk that belonged to the suspect.
Also inside the rifle case was a loaded double drum 100 round
magazine, a loaded 20 round magazine and an empty 20 round magazine for the
AR15, as well as two loaded 9mm magazines but no 9mm firearm to match. There appear to be no law violations
regarding the AR 15 and ammunition that were found in the trunk, however they
were confiscated pending further investigation. Northwood and W. Maple,
3/17, 2354 hrs. Officer stopped a red
Honda for erratic driving.
During the stop the 29-year-old passenger from Detroit was found in
possession of an open bottle of beer and he was cited. The driver was not intoxicated. N/B I-75 near Coolidge,
3/20, 2312 hrs. Officers
responded to the area on a report from a cell phone caller that a red ’97
Chevy Suburban was driving erratically. As officers arrived in the area the
vehicle was pulling off onto the shoulder. The driver indicated he “was driving to Alabama, got tired
near Toledo so decided to turn around and stay with a relative in
Pontiac.” He was not drunk. He stated he did not have a license
in his possession and verbally identified himself. When asked to repeat the information he provided a
different date of birth than he did the first time. He was arrested for “Driving with out a License.” During a search of the car, an
Alabama license was found in the name of a 37-year-old male. The photo matched the driver. He admitted being the ”individual
pictured thereon and providing a fictitious name.” There were two plastic bags containing several pounds of
coinage in the back seat. He
could not provide an explanation as to where he got the money. The money was secured in the property
section of the PD for safekeeping.
Under his correct identity it was discovered that his license was
suspended. He has 20 convictions
for driving while suspended. He
had outstanding arrest warrants from other jurisdictions as well. He was charged

General If you witness a crime: Ø
Get
involved Ø
Call the
police It is
easier to catch a criminal if we are called right away while they are still
in the area. Home Invasion / B&E Always secure
your doors and windows. Ø
Garages and
door walls are targets for thieves. Ø
Always
ensure your garage door and pedestrian doors are secured. Ø
Do not leave
garage door remote controls in cars not parked in the garage. Ø
Use 1 ½’’
dowel rod in the track of all sliding glass windows and doors to help prevent
them from opening. Ø
It has been
proven time and time again that the proper use and application of physical
security will stop a would-be burglar. Ø
Burglary
alarms are only as reliable as the person setting them. If you have an alarm, make sure that
every resident or employee knows how to activate and deactivate it, as well
as the security code. ______________________________ Whether you need Click here to view the Troy Chamber's new
