question were missing. Breaking
and Entries: Crash Investigations: Maple and Thorncroft, 11/4, 1158
hrs. Troy PD and Alliance EMS responded
to the scene of a serious crash in the Wal-Mart Shopping Plaza parking
lot. Investigation revealed a 2002
Chevrolet Trailblazer was west bound on Maple and while attempting to make a
left turn into the far east drive of the plaza, lost control, struck the
curb, crossed the sidewalk, and slid sideways, striking a utility pole. After
striking the pole, it continued across a grassy area and hit a small tree,
breaking it off. Witnesses indicated
the vehicle did not immediately come to a stop in the lot and several drivers
surrounded it, boxed it in, and brought it to a stop. Witnesses indicated as they approached, the
doors were locked and the driver did not respond to their requests to unlock
the vehicle. One witness broke a
window and turned the ignition off.
The driver was a 40-year-old male from Troy. His 4-year-old daughter was seat belted in
the rear seat on the passenger side.
The car struck the utility pole at the passenger side rear where she
was sitting. She sustained what appeared to be serious injuries and was
transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital.
Witnesses indicated it appeared the Trailblazer was weaving on W/B
Maple before the crash, then suddenly accelerated and lost control while
making the turn. The driver told officers he was “not injured and did not
require medical attention.” He stated
he thought he “was placing his foot on the brake while making the turn, but
instead hit the gas.” Regarding not coming to a stop after the crash, he
explained he “was trying to find a better place in the lot to park/stop.” A plastic baggie of pills was located in
one of his pockets. He explained they
were “for a medical condition,” but denied that condition had anything to do
with the crash. He appeared alert
while talking to officers and seemed to recall details. The pills were confiscated for identification. A search warrant for his blood was obtained
and toxicology is pending. Alcohol
does not appear to be a factor at this point.
It is not known at this time if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Investigators found no signs of braking on the part of the Trailblazer. Maple Road was closed in both directions
for approximately 1.5 hours during the investigation. Anyone that might have information about
the Trailblazer’s driving before the crash or that witnessed the crash and
has not yet been interviewed by a Troy Accident Investigator is asked to
contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 248-524-3427. The crash remains under investigation. Pending the completion of the accident
reconstruction and toxicology results, the incident will be submitted to the
Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review in regard to charges. Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and

He stated when he “got out of his car and approached the vehicle that
crashed into him, the female driver told him she was going to pull out of
traffic and then would provide her information.” She proceeded to drive off. When the Grand Prix drove off, the driver
of the VW obtained a partial license plate.
A radio broadcast was put out and a Birmingham Officer located and
stopped the Grand Prix on Oxford and Henley in their town. Troy Officers responded. The car had heavy front end damage, the
airbags were deployed, the plate information matched that which was provided
at the crash scene and the female driver matched the description provided, as
well. The 38-year-old female driver
from Royal Oak admitted “being in the crash.”
When asked why she hadn’t stopped, she stated she “saw several
vehicles heading towards her at high speeds, so fearing they might hit her,
she decided to move her car.” She
stated she was “just going to head beck to the crash scene when she got
stopped.” (She was stopped
approximately 2 miles from the original scene.) When asked if she tried to call the police,
she claimed she “was going to, but couldn’t get good cell phone reception.” She denied drinking, although she smelled
