Monte Carlo parked in the northeast lot; she observed it being driven away by
an unknown subject. An officer in the
area located it westbound on 14 Mile from John R. He followed as it entered S/B I-75 from 14
Mile. When additional Troy and Madison
Heights PD units arrived in the area, an attempt to surround and stop the
vehicle near 12 Mile was made. The
suspect attempted to flee, striking the Troy patrol units as it tried to
unsuccessfully escape the box. The
suspect vehicle was brought to a stop against the cement left side median
wall. The suspect refused to exit the
vehicle so the window was broken out and he was removed. The suspect resisted officers’ attempts to
control him until he was verbally warned he would be shocked with a stun
device if he continued resisting. At
that point, he yelled for officers not to shock him and gave up. The two Troy units and the stolen car sustained
minor damage. The 15-year-old male
suspect from Detroit told officers he “came to the mall with some friends.” He said he was “sorry he hit the patrol car
but he had to show his friends he wasn’t afraid so he could hang with them.” No parent could be located for him. He was housed in Oakland County Children’s
Village pending a hearing. Breaking and Entries: Jimmy Johns, 2881 W. Maple, 11/12,

Investigations: Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and
other Fraud: Michigan
Heritage Bank, 1917 E. Big Beaver, 11/6, 1505 hrs. Complainant
reported a subject who identified himself as a 21-year-old male from Detroit
opened a savings account on 11/6 with a payroll check from an auto parts
store in Hamtramck made out to him for $838.59. The Livonia branch called on 11/8
requesting the status of the account, as the subject was there attempting to
cash a similar payroll check.
Complainant confirmed the original had not cleared, and there were no
liquid funds available in the account.
Complainant proceeded to contact the business listed on the check and
was advised the subject was not an employee and that the name of the business
was no longer that listed on the check.
Upon contacting the other branches to warn about the counterfeit
check, complainant learned the suspect had visited them all attempting to
cash similar payroll checks against his account. He was apparently successful at two
locations. Walgreen’s,
1965 E. Big Beaver, 11/8, 1520 hrs. Complainant
reported a female subject presented an Rx for Oxycontin. When the pharmacist
called the phone number listed thereon to confirm the authenticity of the
scripts, she received a cell phone voice mail. When she looked up the number to the doctor
listed thereon, it came back to a different address and the office confirmed
the script was counterfeit. Apparently
the suspect got nervous during the delay and left the store. Responding officers were unable to locate
her. Suspect: B/F, approximately
40-years-old, wearing a hooded sweatshirt with “DETROIT” written across the
front, blue jeans and sneakers. Wal-Mart,
2201 W. Maple, 11/12, 2030 hrs. LPO’s
reported a 21-year-old female from Hazel Park was at the Customer Service
Desk attempting to cash fraudulent money orders. The subject told officers that she recently
started an on-line business selling beauty products. She processed an e-mail order that was paid
for with the money orders. The buyer
instructed her to cash the money orders, take out the cost of the products,
and send her the change. She states
she was unaware of such scams. She
went to the station with officers where she accessed the e-mails on line and
showed them to the officers. She was
identified and released pending further investigation. The three money orders were confiscated. They totaled $2850.00. 14 Mile
and John R, 11/9, 1130 hrs. A 90-year-old
male complainant from Royal Oak came to the station to report being scammed
out of $5000.00. He stated he was
approached by an older B/M, approximately 60-years, 5’-11,” slim build, at
Costco in Madison Heights who claimed to be looking for a church. He showed the complainant a large roll of
money and complainant offered him a ride.
When they couldn’t find a church, they pulled into Applebee’s on
Stephenson S/O 14 Mile where the subject showed complainant a document
stating he couldn’t return to Africa with “the $400,000.00” due to war and
that he should distribute the money to people in need in the U.S. The complainant then noticed another
subject described as a B/M, 30-35 years, 5’-5,” medium build standing next to
his car. The younger male got into a
discussion with the older male and eventually told him he needed to get his
money into a bank. The older male
explained he was afraid of American banks due to “guard dogs.” The younger male asked the complainant to drive
them to the LaSalle branch on 14 Mile in front of Oakland Mall so he could
withdraw $20,000.00 to prove U.S. banks were safe. The complainant drove them
there. The younger male had him park a
distance away because the older male was “afraid of banks.” The younger male
walked off in the direction of the bank and then returned with an envelope
supposedly full of money. He gave it
to the complainant, told him to drive off and return to prove to the older
male he could be trusted. Complainant
did as requested. The younger male then
somehow convinced the complainant to withdraw $5000.00 of his own funds to
further prove to the older subject that U.S. banks were safe. He did so.
The younger male told complainant to give him the money, drive off and
return to prove he was trustworthy.
When complainant gave him the money, both subjects got out of the
complainant’s car, walked away, and did not return. USA
Credit Union, 363 W. Big Beaver, 10/2 Complainant
reported a subject identifying herself as a 19-year-old from Troy opened a
savings account on 9/26. On 10/2 she
cashed a $723.62 payroll check. The
check was later returned to the credit union as invalid and eventually
confirmed as counterfeit. Follow-up
revealed a similar incident at a branch in Auburn Hills involving the same suspect. Complainant
reported losing his wallet while shopping at the Somerset Collection. He stated he has recently received notices
in the mail about unauthorized accounts in his name as well as bad checks In
addition to the above, one credit card fraud report was taken. One
“sweepstakes winner” scam report was taken with no losses. Domestics/Family Troubles: Troy Officers responded to two

revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal enforcement
action was taken. One missing/run-away juvenile report

a third bike. The lock was cut. International
Academy of Design and Technology, 1850 Research, 11/7, 1500 hrs. An
employee left her purse unattended in the main lobby area of the building. During that time, a 40-year-old male
student from Saginaw was observed throwing his jacket over the purse, and
then picking the jacket up with the purse concealed under it. He proceeded to place the jacket on with the
purse concealed underneath it.
Officers confronted the subject who admitted stealing the purse. He turned a small amount of cash over to
the officers from his pockets that he stated he “took from the purse.” Two females approached security and advised
they found a purse discarded in a restroom in an adjacent building. The victim identified the purse as hers and
stated all that was missing was $15.00 in cash. The suspect was arrested. 6056 Adams,

Madison Hgts. Victoria’s

female complainant from Canada stated she made a purchase and inadvertently
left a bank envelope containing $200.00 on the counter. When she returned, it
was gone. Investigation revealed a male and female subject were in line
behind her. The female pointed out the envelope to the male, placed her purse
over the top of it, and then “discreetly” placed it inside her purse. The male paid for the transaction with a
credit card and they left. The officer
began searching the mall and found the male outside of a salon and the female
inside getting a makeover. When he
confronted them, the 24-year-old female from Troy admitted finding the
envelope on the counter, however claimed she didn’t alert store employees
because she said, “You always hear stories of store employees keeping money
that is turned over to them.” She
claimed she wasn’t sure what she was going to do with the money and admitted
not contacting security or the police.
She also admitted discarding the envelope in a trash can and putting
the cash in her wallet. She turned the
$200.00 over to the officer who returned it to the complainant. The female and her 26-year-old male
companion from Rochester Hills were identified and released at the scene
pending complainant’s decision on prosecution. EDAG,

pick up later. Employees located a
suspicious male hanging around outside the complex. He fled when observed, and was last seen
meeting up with another male subject behind an adjacent building. He apparently returned later, and was
detained by employees pending officers’ arrival. He appeared intoxicated. He claimed he was visiting a friend in the
area, but could not provide an address and stated he probably couldn’t show
officers where the friend lived. He
claimed he was urinating in the lot when the employees detained him. He

Bank, 3125 John R, 11/9, 1840 hrs. Teller
reported that an unknown male approached the bank inside the Kroger store with
a dark Halloween type face mask on. He
displayed a silver handgun in one hand, and had an empty bushel basket in the
other. He ordered her to “Hurry!
Hurry!” and not to “pull the thing” apparently referring to the alarm as she
placed an undisclosed amount of currency into his basket. The suspect exited the store and jumped
into the bed of an awaiting gray Dodge pickup that was parked along the curb.
The suspect was dressed in an all black jogging suit with a hood that was
pulled up over his head. There is a
light colored random design on the left pant leg, chest, right arm, and left
side of the hood. At approximately
0039 hrs. that morning, officers responded to a report of a suspicious gray pickup
that was running but unoccupied on Avalon in a subdivision east of the
bank. The plate information matched
that of the get away vehicle from the robbery. The truck was found to be stolen from
Detroit the day before. It appears the
suspects may have parked another vehicle on the street during the robbery,
using the stolen pickup during the crime, and then returned to dump the pickup
and depart in the second vehicle. A
dark colored four door sedan was also reportedly observed parked but running
in the area around the time of the original robbery. Suspicious Incidents: Abrasive Brokers, 1695 Rochester,

$250.00. Complainant indicated several
boxes of his company’s inventory came up missing during construction over the

the items offered for sale and their uniqueness to his business, complainant
suspected they may be the missing items.
He agreed to pay the requested $250.00, however the subject stopped by
the business while he was out, dropped off the items, and another employee
wrote the subject a company check for them.
Upon his return, complainant confirmed the items were those stolen
from his inventory over the summer. Total
value: $1690.00. Traffic Altercations: Maple and Stephenson, 11/7, 0850
hrs. Troy Officers observed a burgundy
Cadillac CTS E/B on Maple near Stephenson that was reportedly involved in a
traffic altercation on S/B I-75 in Bloomfield Twp. A 25-year-old male from Burton and his
25-year-old male passenger from Monroe reported the Cadillac cut them off and
the occupants exchanged “gestures” at which point the front seat passenger in
the Cadillac threw a bottle at their pickup which cracked the
windshield. Once in Troy, they
reported the Cadillac continued swerving at them and continued cutting them
off. The 19-year-old male driver of
the CTS, 21-year-old male front seat passenger, both from Sterling Heights,
and the 19-year-old male back seat passenger from Southfield indicated
“gestures” were exchanged between the occupants of the two vehicles, but
denied anything was thrown. The driver
had no license in his possession. He
was arrested for driving without a license in his possession and reckless
driving. The passengers were released
at the scene. The CTS was impounded as
neither passenger had a valid driver’s license in their possession. Vandalism: Weapons

Dequindre, 11/14, 0230 hrs. Officer observed a power washing
crew working in the plaza. One of the
subjects appeared to be working on a fire hydrant with a wrench. Upon inquiring, the subject indicated he
was told by his boss to use the hydrant as the plaza had no water
available. The officer pointed out the
hydrant was tagged as winterized and his using it may create a hazard given
upcoming winter conditions in event of a fire. The officer warned the hydrants were not
available for other than FD use and passed their company information on to
the FD for follow-up. Case Updates: Apartment
Basement Storage Locker Thief Arrested Plain
clothes officers were working the area of Somerset, Kirts, and Golfview in
response to a series of apartment basement storage locker break-ins where the
thief was primarily stealing bikes. On
11/6 at approximately 1050 hrs. one of the officers observed a male subject
walking in the area empty handed.
Shortly thereafter he was observed pushing a mountain bike and
carrying a black bag that appeared full.
Officers watched as he tried the common door on one of the apartment buildings
in the area. Having no success at that
door, he proceeded to another building where he forced entry. When a plain clothes officer entered and
proceeded to the basement, the suspect was in the process of exiting a
storage locker. The officer checked with
the bin owner who confirmed the gate had been forced open. Upon inspection, nothing appeared
missing. Officers watched as the
suspect got on the bike and rode to Somerset Mall, placed it on the front
bike rack of a bus and got on. The
suspect exited the bus at Nine Mile and Woodward. Officers approached him as he was in the
process of getting the bike off the rack.
He was placed under arrest.
Three used syringes, two bent credit cards, a knife, and a multi-tool
were recovered from his person. Some
Korean currency and coins were recovered from his pockets, an American flag
patch was recovered from his wallet, and he was wearing an Army long sleeved
gray T-shirt. Those items were
reported stolen from a storage locker the day before. Officers located 14 pieces of bent copper
piping inside the black bag he was carrying.
The bag had a name tag on it.
Officers contacted the person listed thereon who checked her apartment
basement storage locker, confirmed it had been broken into, and the black bag
had been stolen from it. The suspect
was cooperative with officers and indicated he “had been stealing bikes from
storage lockers from the Somerset area apartment basements for the last
several weeks.” He stated the “copper
pipes were stolen from hot water tanks in the apartment building basements.” He indicated he was the individual who
stole the suitcases and other items outlined in the incident below. He stated he “sold the items to an
individual in Roseville for cash.”
He stated he “sold many of the bikes for cash on the street in the
area of Macomb Mall, as well as Six Mile and Gratiot.” He stated he “sold the copper piping at
scrap yards along 9 Mile.” He stated
he’d “enter apartment buildings where he found the common doors open, or would
force them open using the plastic credit cards” recovered from his
pockets. He stated he “removed storage
gate hinge pins, cut the locks, or forced the gates apart to gain entry into
the bins.” He showed officers the
storage bin he stole the Schwinn bike he was in possession of on this
date. The owner was located and
confirmed the bike was his and his storage locker had been broken into. The suspect is a 30-year-old male
originally from Auburn Hills. He was
charged with five counts of Home Invasion. Golfview,
10/21-11/5 Complainant
reported being contacted by a male subject who inquired if she was missing
some suitcases and other items. When
she went to her apartment building basement storage locker, she discovered it
had been broken into and her suitcases, a watch, subwoofer, MP3 player, mini
disc player, and speakers were missing.
The male caller stated while he was at work a male entered the store
and offered to sell him the suitcases and contents. The subject represented he was experiencing
hard times and needed money to travel out of state. It appears he was representing the items
were his. He stated a nearby pawn shop
refused to purchase the items from him.
The subject and caller agreed to $50.00 for all the items. The caller stated after purchasing them,
he discovered the complainant’s name inside one of the bags, so called her to
check on the items’ status. She
confirmed they were hers. The
responding officer spoke with the 34-year-old male caller from Berkley who
repeated his story. He stated after
calling the complainant and discovering the items were stolen, he called
Roseville PD. They checked the area,
but were unable to locate the original suspect at the time. The Troy officer stood by until the subject
showed up with the items. The
complainant identified them as stolen from her storage bin. She also advised her bike was missing from
the bin. Arrest Summary: In addition to those outlined above,
the following arrests were also made during the period: Drunk Driving: 12 Drove While License Suspended: 5 Warrants: 7 Retail Fraud: 11 Domestic Assault: 1 |
