Crime Alert for period ending April 25, 2008

Altercations/Disorderly Conduct:

Assaults:

Comerica Bank, 4999 Crooks, 4/18, 1936 hrs.

26-year-old male complainant from Bloomfield Twp. reported that as he tried to exit the ATM enclosure, a male approached and blocked him from leaving.  He stated the subject then began mumbling phrases like, “Hey man, what’s your problem?”  He stated the subject then “lunged at him and then shoved him.”  He stated he “thought the subject might be trying to mug him, so tried to walk away, only to have him block his path.”  He stated the “subject eventually pulled a set of keys out of his pocket, positioned them in his fist, and threatened him with them.”  He stated the “suspect followed him to his car, where the subject tried to use the keys to damage it.”  The suspect returned to the passenger side of the vehicle he arrived in.  The complainant stated as “he followed in an attempt to get the plate; the suspect exited and approached his car again.”  The suspect eventually returned to his car, which drove off.  A responding officer located the ’98 Chrysler Concorde in a nearby lot.  The 63-year-old male driver from Detroit stated he “stopped at the bank at his friend’s/complainant’s request.  He stated he “observed his associate chasing the complainant around the parking lot.”  The 45-year-old male from Rochester Hills, who was the passenger, told officers that the “complainant was blocking the entrance to the ATM enclosure, so he gently pushed past him.”  He was arrested for Assault and Battery.

Area of Babbit and Abington, 4/22, 1400 hrs.

A 32-year-old female complainant from Troy reported that while in her yard with her 35-year-old female neighbor and their two three year old sons, a blue Ford Explorer pulled up to the curb and stopped.  The three-year-olds were playing inside a nylon tent.  Complainant stated, as the Explorer came to a stop, the front passenger side window opened and the male front seat passenger launched a stone from a slingshot at them.  She said the stone flew by her at chest level and struck the outside of the tent.  The Explorer proceeded to flee from the scene along Abington, however both women  knew there was no outlet from the subdivision from that street, so ran out to Churchill Street that does lead out of the sub in an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle.  They observed the vehicle on Churchill and attempted to get it to stop, however the vehicle veered recklessly around them.  As it did, a male passenger yelled out, “F-u lady!”  The vehicle was being driven by a female.  The complainant turned over the stone that had been shot at them to officers and no one was injured.  A responding officer located the Explorer on John R near Tucker.  It appears when the police car came into view; the suspects saw it and ran a red light at Long Lake in an attempt to avoid being stopped.  This action caused a driver on Long Lake to take evasive action to avoid a crash with the Explorer.  The officer was able to catch up to and stop the Explorer.  The 16-year-old female driver from Troy was arrested for “Reckless Driving.”  A black “wrist-rocket” sling shot and plastic bag containing 9 stones was recovered from under the front passenger’s seat.  The 14-year-old male front seat passenger from Troy was identified as the shooter and he was arrested for “Felonious Assault” and “Illegal Transport of a Sling Shot in a Motor Vehicle.”  The two back seat passengers, both 15-year-old males from Troy, were transported to the station and turned over to their parents.  The driver and front seat passenger were taken to the station, processed, juvenile petitions initiated against them, and they were turned over to their parents.  Apparently none of the youths in the vehicle had attended school that day.

Crash Investigations:

Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud:

72-year-old female complainant came to the station to report receiving a call from someone claiming to be from Washington D.C. insisting on getting her and her husband’s social security and banking information.  She provided the information.  She realized her mistake and changed account numbers at the bank with no losses/fraud detected yet.

Complainant reported receiving notice from a collection agency regarding a $927.07 phone bill that he never opened.

Complainant reported someone unsuccessfully attempted a cash withdrawal from a business account via Western Union.  Unknown on how the account information was accessed, however there were not enough funds in the account to cover the withdrawal so it did not go through.

Complainant reported receiving a call from a bank manager from New York advising her that a female visited the bank and attempted to cash a check in the amount of $4981.00 using complainant’s savings account number while providing a Michigan Driver’s License in complainant’s name.  The bank manager advised the person pictured clearly didn’t resemble the individual attempting to complete the transaction, so the license was confiscated and the transaction denied.

Complainant came to the station to report after terminating a 20-year-old female employee from Oxford; her company discovered the subject used a company account to open an unauthorized phone account after the termination.

Citizens Bank, 900 Tower, 4/21, 1140 hrs.

Manager reported a female representing herself as a 27-year-old from Detroit appeared trying to deposit a check in the amount of $1500.00 and receive $500.00 in cash back.  All four of her accounts have zero balances and she has unsuccessfully attempted the same transaction at several different branches.  When she was advised by the teller that a manager would have to be summoned, she grabbed the check and the ID she was using and ran out of the bank.  Bank personnel suspect the$1500.00 check is bogus, due to the several attempts to cash it and no balances in the accounts.

Troy Officers responded to one incident involving a family trouble/domestic dispute where investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal enforcement action was taken.

Complainant reported an ex-boyfriend showed up at the residence of a female friend she was visiting.  He apparently had been calling her all day, as well as made some threats against a male friend of hers.  They refused to open the door and he walked up to her car parked in the drive, kicked and dented the driver’s side door before leaving the area on foot.  Responding officers located the 25-year-old male from Sterling Hgts. Raintree Park, 3775 John R, 4/22, 1920 hrs.

Officers observed an occupied vehicle parked in the lot where the occupants were passing a pipe around.  Upon walking up, the odor of burning marijuana was apparent.  A 16-year-old male passenger had a pipe and small baggie of marijuana that he initially claimed “they found.” He was transported to the station where a juvenile petition was initiated against him and he was turned over to his parents.  The 17-year-old male driver who was observed smoking from the pipe was cited for possession and released at the scene.  The other occupant, a 16-year-old male, was not seen smoking and was released at the scene after his parents were contacted with no charges against him.

Crime Prevention Tips

Ø If you would like to have the security of your residence or business inspected please contact the Troy Police Crime Prevention Officer at 248-524-3464!

Assaults

Don’t let the traffic or the gas prices cause you to lose your temper.  If someone says or does something to you to make you angry, stop and allow yourself to calm down before taking any action.  All too often, people react to a driver cutting them off or a rude neighbor by sinking to their level and getting involved in a physical confrontation.  A better course of action is to allow the other driver to merge and provide a safe cushion zone between the cars.  If you feel yourself being antagonized, call the police and let us help to settle the matter in a calm, legal, and non-violent way.

“Travelers” or Door-to-Door Scam Prevention

1.                 If a person comes to your home offering to do an inspection of some type or tells you a repair is needed, refuse the offer!  It is most likely a scam.

2.                 Never let anyone into your home that you did not call.  All utility workers will have a picture ID.  If they do not or you have a doubt, even if they have some sort of picture ID, refuse to let them in.  In most cases, utility workers will not have to enter your home to do repairs.

3.                 Never exit your home for anyone you do not know that wants you to “see what the problem is outside the home.”  They are probably having you exit so an associate can enter the home to steal from you.

4.                 “Travelers” use work type trucks/vans often with magnetic signs and out of state plates on them.

5.                 Will work/scam in an area for a short time but with multiple target homes – usually targeting seniors!

6.                 Never agree to make change for someone.  This is a popular scam used to find out where you keep your money.

7.
