FBI Warns of China Earthquake E-mail Scams

The FBI is warning about e-mail scammers trying to make money from last month's massive earthquake in China's Sichuan province... This story was originally posted at PCWorld.com:

It's become a familiar pattern: after the tragedy, the spam.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning computer users to be wary of unsolicited e-mail messages trying to raise money to help victims of last week's massive earthquake in China's Sichuan province.

The scam e-mails offer free vacation trips to the largest donors and may use fake logos of real online payment services in order to trick their victims, the FBI said. Similar scams followed tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina, the Virginia Tech shootings and the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S., the FBI said in an advisory, dated Tuesday.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck May 12, with its epicenter about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Chengdu. More than 41,000 people are confirmed dead after the disaster, and hundreds of thousands more have been injured.

Scammers are sending phony e-mails, some of them extremely long and filled with personal anecdotes, using titles such as "Help me," "Help me please. Read through the letter" and "Last hope. Help me please," according to Sam Masiello, director of threat management with security vendor MX Logic. He has blogged about the scams here.

The e-mailers try to start a correspondence with the victim and then try to arrange a money transfer, he said. "This is one of your classic 419-type scams," he said in an interview.

Nordstrom, 2850 W. Big Beaver, 4/27, 1412-1426 hrs.

LPO (Loss Prevention Officer) came to the station to report that two purchases for shoes had been made for $779.10 and $706.63 respectfully by a group of two females and a male using a credit account number.  The male apparently verbally identified himself as an authorized account user.  LPO’s learned the account belonged to a couple in California who when contacted advised the name provided by the male was added to their account without their knowledge or permission.  The subjects were last seen leaving the area in a black ’03 Range Rover registered to a 26-year-old female from Detroit that matches the description of one of the three subjects involved in the purchase.  A 38-year-old male and a 24-year-old female, both from Detroit, who are associates of the vehicle owner, match the description of the other two subjects.

Complaint reported being contacted by a credit card company checking on the validity of suspicious purchases on an account in her name.  She advised she never opened the account.  She proceeded to obtain a credit report and discovered a second fraudulent account opened in her name.

A 57-year-old female complainant from Troy came to the station to report someone managed to hack into her shared e-mail account with her husband, accessed their address list and sent e-mails indicating her husband is in trouble and needs money.

***After investigation, this report is actually a case where creating and/or passing “chain e-mails” by Carbon Copying (Cc) can come back and haunt you!  By passing on your address book e-mails in some form of chain e-mail the e-mail addresses can come into the hands of unscrupulous scammers who will then create an e-mail account imitating the passer of the chain e-mail and then send messages to all e-mails Cc in chain e-mail making up an emergency situation that “requires immediate sending of money.”  Please either do not take part in chain e-mails or Blind Carbon Copy (Bcc) all recipients with deleting out all forwarding information in the chain mail!

Complainant reported discovering a fraudulent withdrawal from her bank account for $99.95.  It appears it was perpetrated over the Internet.

A 29-year-old male complainant from Chesterfield Twp. stated he met a male who identified himself as a 23-year-old from Rochester at a gas station in Detroit where the other subject admired his necklace with charm and cross.  Apparently they made arrangements for a meeting at a later date in the parking lot at Nino Salvaggio’s for the subject to buy the necklace.  During their first meeting, the subject provided a personal check in the amount of $700.00 as a partial payment.  Complainant deposited the check into his account.  They met again an a different date in the same lot where the subject provided two more personal checks, one for $1155.00 and the other for $800.00 for the balance owed. The complainant turned the necklace over to the subject at that meeting.  Complainant deposited the $1155.00 check that afternoon and held the other at the subject’s request.  He later received notice from his bank that the checks were drawn on a closed account.  He says the necklace was worth $5000.00.

The officer observed a male walk away from the vehicle, approach a residence and knock on the door.  The officer approached the 24-year-old male from Sterling Hgts. who admitted being the driver of the car.  When asked about the crash, he stated “he thought he got hit.”  He stated he “left the area to go to a girlfriend’s home.” She was not there, so he stated he came to the Roundtree address to “see if another friend was home.”  He was unsteady on his feet and smelled of intoxicants.  He admitted drinking.  When asked how much, he replied, “Plenty.”  He failed sobriety tests and was arrested.  He blew 0.18 on a breath test.

A 59-year-old male from Warren told officers he had been sleeping in the car in the lot.  He stated when he began backing it up in the lot, he ended up on the grass and then somehow the fire started.  His speech was slurred, he was unsteady on his feet, and when asked stated he drank a bottle of Schnapps.  He failed sobriety tests and was arrested. He blew 0.21 on a breath test.

Jamaica and Kenyon, 6/2, 2153 hrs.

Off duty officer observed a ’07 Chrysler 300 lose control and drive up onto a lawn.  It returned to the roadway and continued driving, swerving and nearly striking a parked truck as it proceeded.  The officer telephoned Troy dispatch and followed it to a driveway in Clawson where it pulled in.  The 46-year-old female driver/lone occupant from Clawson staggered out and fell on the ground.  Uniformed officers arrived and found her reeking of intoxicants, slurring her words/barely able to speak and unable to steady herself.  She could not walk with out assistance to prevent her from falling. She blew 0.20 on a PBT and as officers tried to arrest her, she began yelling she “didn’t do anything” and to let her “go inside” as she denied driving the car.  The front of her car was damaged.  In checking the area where she left the roadway, officers located evidence that she struck the curb and left a piece of the front spoiler behind.  A blood test was obtained.  Charges for felony drunk driving are pending toxicology as she has three prior convictions.  Apparently Clawson officers had been summoned to the residence earlier in the day due to a friend’s concerns over her being intent on driving his car while drinking.  Clawson officers had warned her not to drive.
