Crime Alert for period ending March 7, 2008 Altercations/Disorderly Conduct: Assaults: Troy Sports
Center, 1819 E. Big Beaver, 12/2, 2100 hrs. 25 year old
male from Warren came to the station to report injuries sustained during an
assault he suffered while playing hockey in early December of last year. He claimed he checked a 23 year old male on
the other team into the boards; he stated the contact was minor, but
explained it was a no check league. He
stated the subject went into a fit of rage and while he was skating away, the
suspect struck him from behind in the neck w/his arm. He stated the subject proceeded to tackle
him and he went down face first striking the ice. He chipped two of his teeth and since has
developed systems related to striking his head on the ice. Not clear at this writing if he is seeking
prosecution. Assist Other Department/Law
Enforcement: Auto/Vehicle Thefts: Complainant reported her 37 year old estranged daughter
w/past drug problems called her and asked if she would pick her up in Detroit
and let her spend the night.
Complainant agreed, only to awaken to her (complainant’s) friend’s ’97
Chrysler missing from the driveway and her daughter gone. The daughter apparently called three days
later and stated she’d return the car, but she has not done so. Charter, 3/3, 0000-0620 hrs. ’00
Chrysler Sebring stolen from lot. Kroger, 3125 John R, 2/29, 1300-1400 hrs. ’93 Honda stolen from lot. Breaking and Entries: Crash Investigations: N/B I-75 south of Wattles, 2/29, 0330 hrs. Officers responded to a report of a crash involving a ’98 Olds
Intrigue. The incident was called in
by a passerby. Investigation revealed
the 23 year old male driver/lone occupant from Shelby Township was northbound
in the far left lane when he veered off the roadway and struck the center
median guardrail. The vehicle rolled
after striking the guardrail and the driver was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead on the scene. It appears he was not wearing a seatbelt. The left and center northbound lanes were
closed as was the left southbound lane while crash investigators processed
the scene. At this point, alcohol does
not appear to be a factor. The road
was clear; weather was not a factor.
The investigation revealed the driver just completed a 12 hour shift
at 0300 hrs. at his employer which is in Detroit and was apparently on his
way home. It is suspected he may have
fallen asleep and drifted off the roadway.
It appears no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Anyone that may have witnessed the crash
itself or might have additional information is asked to contact the Troy
Police Department at 248-524-3477. Coolidge and Leeland, 2/26, 0905 hrs. Officers responded to a report of an injury crash where a Chrysler mini
van collided with the rear of a City of Troy snow plow. Investigation revealed the truck was
stopped in the southbound lanes of Coolidge assisting another motorist that
was stuck in a snow bank. The
emergency lights and flashers were activated on the plow. The roads were icy and snow covered. The 38 year old female from Troy driving
the mini van attempted to make a lane change to go around the truck, lost control, and slid sideways
into the rear corner of the truck. The
rear passenger side window of the van was punctured by the corner of the
truck injuring the driver’s four year old son who was secured in a car seat
in the rear passenger side of the van.
The four year old was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where
he was listed in serious, but non-life threatening condition. The driver was seat belted and not
injured. The southbound lanes of
Coolidge were closed for about a half an hour during the investigation. N/B I-75 N/O Coolidge, 2/29, 1041 hrs. Officers responded to a report of a single car roll over crash. The 25 year old male driver/lone occupant
of the ’05 Jeep Grand Cherokee
was not injured, however his license was suspended and he was arrested. Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and
other Fraud: Home daycare operator reported she placed an ad for openings on the
Craig’s List web site. She received an
e-mail from a subject claiming to be from England who was being transferred
to Detroit in the near future and in need of daycare. Additional e-mails from the subject
indicated she was given a moving expense check. She advised the complainant she was going
to send her the moving expense check and she should deposit the check into
her own account and wire her back the cash in excess of the day care
costs. When the check arrived via UPS,
complainant opened it and suspected it was fraudulent, so did not complete
the transaction as instructed; no losses. Complainants reported they are trying to resolve on-going identity
theft. Recently they discovered credit
accounts opened using their personal information, people added to their
accounts, and changes in their billing address. Complainant reported receiving a collection notice regarding a $700.00
loan she didn’t take out; complainant reported she had her ID and credit card
stolen at a hospital in Macomb. National City Bank, 767 W. Big Beaver, 3/3, 1200 hrs. Manager reported a subject who identified herself as a 27 year old
female from Detroit presented a check from another bank for $5000.00
requesting $2000.00 deposited into her checking account and the rest into
savings. Bank reps discovered the
account against which the check was written had been closed for
non-sufficient funds three days after she opened it. Apparently the bank’s fraud records had
numerous contacts on the subject. When
the subject became aware of the fraud warning against her, she quickly left
leaving a state ID card behind. Complainant discovered numerous fraudulent charges totaling $1582.95 on
her February statement. When she
contacted her bank, an additional $974.15 in fraudulent charges was
discovered from January. Saks, Somerset Collection, 2901 W. Big Beaver, 3/3, 1239 hrs. LPO reported cash office personnel located twelve counterfeit $50.00
bills apparently while processing receipts.
LPO believes the bills were used during the course of a purchase of
two pair of shoes for $1107.70. Schenden’s Spa, 201 W. Big Beaver, 4/20/2007 Complainant reported a 38 year old female from Troy paid for services
w/a $185.00 check that came back on a closed account check. Attempts to get the subject to make the
check good were unsuccessful. Complainant reported his 82 year old father-in-law received a call from
someone in Jamaica advising him he won a prize and needed to send $50.00 in
cash to claim it. His father-in-law
wired the money to a location in Jamaica via Western Union. The complainant stated while at his
father-in-law’s residence, a call came in from Jamaica. He picked up the phone and the caller told
him the package was ready, but he had to send more money for it to be
released. The complainant stated he
advised the caller to stop calling, threatened to call police, and hung
up. The caller called back and told
the complaisant he would kill him and his wife. The complainant hung up a second time. 20 year old female from Plano, Texas reported receiving a notice from
the IRS indicating she owed $18,193.00 in back taxes from her employment at a
business in Troy. Complainant stated
she never worked or lived in Troy. The
address used by the suspect is apparently out of Morristown, Tennessee; it
appears someone used complainant’s personnel information while working for
the company in question. FRAUD ALERT The E-mail pictured below is just one example of a “phishing scam”
intended to scare people into inadvertently providing access to their bank
account online. It was received by
several members of the Police Department (even we are not immune.) A few things to note in the picture (shown circled in red): 1) The FROM:
field suggests that you not reply to the email. This is because the email address was not
the actual address that the email came from and they don’t want you to tip
off the legitimate company to what they are doing. 2) The time
that it was SENT – 4:53 AM (are banks open then?) 3) Misspellings
in the text. Legitimate businesses
have multiple reviews before correspondence is sent. 4) The
highlighted hyperlink indicates that it goes to the bank’s domain, but when
you hover your mouse over it, the link is actually to a different
website. This is a relatively simple
thing to spoof, and a lot of people don’t wait to see it before clicking .
When I clicked on the link in the Email, my browser was redirected to
yet another website, one that was not so easy to decipher. The site had a carbon-copy of the
legitimate site, including MOST of the links.
The one thing that is different is where it sends the account log-on
information when you enter it.
My browser actually identified this site as a fraudulent site that was
trying to steal my personal information.
We recommend keeping your software up to date so that you can be
protected from scams like this.
If you don’t recognize the sender of an email, the best practice is to
DELETE IT. Don’t follow the links or
try to launch your own investigation into the scheme. Just delete the email. Chances are that if you reply, even by
sending bogus information, the scammer will be able to see your email address
or IP address, and add that information to a “verified email” list, ensuring
that you receive even more unsolicited emails (SPAM.) We also want to remind you that NO LEGITIMATE BUSINESS EVER
SOLICITS PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA E-MAIL OR PHONE. If you have an account with them, they
already have your information. You
don’t need to “confirm” anything. When Flagstar Bank found out that my credit card number may have been
compromised, they called me at the number that I had provided them and told
me about the possible problem. They
did not ask me for any information, but rather told me to go into a
branch or call the bank at a number that I knew was legitimate (from my own
paperwork, the phonebook, the company’s website, etc.) to determine how to
correct the problem (they ended up replacing my card with a new number.) Domestics/Family Troubles: Troy
Officers responded to six incidents involving family troubles/domestic
disputes where investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred,
therefore no formal enforcement action was taken. Investigators
are following up on one report of a domestic assault where the suspect was
gone when officers arrived. In another
case, the complainants alleged the other was the aggressor in the physical
contact/assault; follow-up on-going in that case, as well. Officers
served one individual a no-contact PPO at the scene of another domestic; he
complied with its provisions without incident. Drugs/Narcotics: Drunk/Intoxicated Driving Incidents

toward them in the southbound lanes of the divided highway just S/O 14
Mile. The vehicle turned east on 14
Mile and attempted to enter the entrance ramp for N/B I-75 where officers
stopped it. The 53 year old male from
Hartland claimed he wasn’t aware he had been going the wrong way on the
divided highway. He stated he had
three beers at a restaurant and was heading home. He smelled strongly of intoxicants, failed
sobriety tests, and was arrested. He blew .13 on a breath test. Area of 1200 E. Big Beaver, 2/29, 0938 hrs. Officers responded to a report of a red P/U stuck in a snow bank with
the driver slumped over the wheel.

the ramp, struck the right guard rail, and continued off the road onto the
right shoulder. The first officer to
arrive located the Mustang backing up on the right shoulder with heavy front
end damage. Both passenger side tires
had been completely ripped from the rims.
The officer stopped it. The 19

moving out with the assistance of a 40 year old male friend from
Detroit. They apparently loaded up
items from the residence into a rented truck and then left to run errands. When they returned, the rented truck was
gone as were numerous items that were still inside the residence. A witness stated after they left, several
males showed up, entered the residence, loaded up the items, and then
left. Complainant claims her “friend”
proceeded to tell her he thought he knew who took the property and that he
needed some money to get it back. She
gave him $400.00 and he left. He
returned claiming he saw some of the “stuff” at a couple of houses off of
Seven Mile in Detroit. He was gone
when officers took the report.
Officers were called back on 2/28 over a dispute between the two about
the missing furniture. He told
officers he had no knowledge of the missing property and alleged the
