The Focus tried to change lanes in an attempt to get out of its way, but the van also changed lanes and struck the Focus in the rear.  As the Focus changed lanes again, the van struck it again on the right side.  The van then slowed and eventually stopped in the right lane near McNichols.  The 83-year-old male driver from Commerce told the officer he “had to get away from some bad guys.”  He smelled strongly of intoxicants.  He appeared confused and didn’t seem to understand he struck two vehicles.  He denied drinking alcohol.  He failed sobriety tests and was arrested for “Drunk Driving” and “Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident.”  He blew 0.13 on a breath test.    Investigation regarding the original crash indicated a 58-year-old female from Southgate was driving a Chevy Cavalier on S/B I-75 when she came up behind the slower moving mini-van in the center lane.  As she moved into the left lane to pass it, it followed and began tailgating her. As she moved into the center lane to let it pass it followed and struck her from behind.  As she pulled into the right lane, the van struck her again.  She moved to the left, and the van struck her a third time causing her to spin out and strike the median barrier near Wattles.  She stopped there and her car started on fire.  The Troy FD responded and extinguished the fire.  She was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, treated and later released.
