Breaking and Entries:

BP Gas Station, 1980 E. Maple, Jan 4th, 1125 hrs.

Officers responding to a burglary alarm discovered a glass panel from the garage door shattered with a brick.  Cash register area appeared to have been ransacked and there were cigarettes spilled on the floor.  However, owner stated it appeared nothing was taken.

Construction Site, 6000 block of Rochester, 1/3-1/4, 1630-0730 hrs.

Building under construction entered and 30’ of copper wiring stolen.

Cold Stone Creamery, 3137 Crooks, 1/5, 1900 hrs.

Complainant/server reported a male and female came in and made a small purchase for $1.49 for which the male paid with a $50.00 bill.  When she gave him his change, he asked for five $20.00 bills.  She explained she didn’t have five $20.00’s, but provided four $20.00’s and two $10.00’s.  During the transaction, the female was constantly talking to the complainant, as if trying to distract her.  She stated she became confused during the interchange. The register came up $50.00 short.  After the incident the manager checked with the restaurant next door.  Employees at Chipotle advised the couple had been there just before the incident at Cold Stone.  They made a small purchase and the male paid with a $20.00.  When the cashier gave him his change, he gave the cashier another $20.00 and asked for a ten and two fives, which the cashier provided.  The male gave the cashier another $20.00 and told him to keep the other change he was owed and give him a total of $40.00 back.  The cashier advised him he had already given him his change.  After a brief disagreement over that matter, the subject advised the cashier was right and it was his mistake.  The couple left.  Apparently the female was engaging the cashier’s fellow employee in constant conversation during that transaction, again possibly trying to provide a distraction.  Subjects:  B/M, approximately 50-years-old, graying hair, beard, 6’-3,” heavy set, wearing a black coat.  B/F, approximately 40-years-old, 6’-0,” wearing a black coat and winter type hat, heavier than the male.

Crash Investigations:

Rochester south of Square Lake, 1/5, 0108 hrs.

Troy police along with Alliance EMS responded to a report of a serious injury crash on Rochester Road south of Square Lake.  Investigation revealed a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo driven by a 16-year-old male from Troy that was north bound in the right lane lost control, left the road to the right  and rolled several times prior to striking a tree.  The front seat passenger, a 16-year-old male from Sterling Heights and a rear seat passenger, a 15-year-old male from Sterling Heights were ejected.  Both were transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where the 15-year-old, Forat Komo of Sterling Heights, died from his injuries at 0348 hrs.  The 16-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition.  Two other rear seat passengers, both 17-year-old males from Sterling Heights, were transported to the hospital and have since been released.  The driver was not injured.  He was wearing a seat belt. Investigation revealed the group in the Aveo was at a cafe in the area of Long Lake and Rochester.  They left along with another group of five young people.  The other group was driving in a Honda Accord.  Apparently both vehicles proceeded northbound together on Rochester Road from westbound Long Lake.  It appears they were paralleling one another in adjacent lanes.  It appears the Honda suddenly cut in front of the Aveo from the left though lane which caused the driver of the Aveo to drive to the right where he left the roadway and lost control.  There was no contact between the two vehicles.  The Honda stopped at the scene.  There was information conveyed to the officers at the scene that the rear seat passengers in the Aveo were rocking back and forth inside the car causing it to rock back and forth on its suspension as it proceeded along.  Preliminary indications are that speeds may have been approximately 60 mph in the 45 mph zone.  There was reportedly a third, unrelated vehicle in the left through lane in front of the Honda.  It appears the Honda made the lane change in front of the Aveo as it came up behind that vehicle.  The Honda was driven by a 16-year-old male from Sterling Heights.  The passengers were a 17-year-old female from Sterling, a 15-year-old female from Sterling, a 15-year-old female from Shelby, and a 17-year-old female from California.  There were no injuries related to the occupants of the Honda.  Alcohol is not a factor nor apparently was the weather or road conditions.

N/B I-75 near Rochester, 1/7, 1915 hrs.

Four vehicles, a Buick Rendezvous, Ford Escort, Lincoln LS, and a Chevy Suburban were damaged when they struck a semi truck wheel that somehow ended up in the northbound lanes of I-75.  Only the Buick Rendezvous was drivable.

Big Beaver and Wilshire, 1/7, 2049 hrs.

Officers took a hit and run property damage crash report wherein the driver of the at fault ’92 Toyota Celica drove off/fled.  The victim obtained a license plate, but also noted the young male that was driving had a restaurant/business t-shirt on.  The officer checked the local address where the vehicle was registered with negative results over the next several days.  On 1/9 he checked a local restaurant with a similar name as that reported on the t-shirt and located the 16-year-old male driver from Troy at work.  He admitted “bumping” into the victim’s car that night.  He stated he had “five beers that night.”  He has no license.  The vehicle’s owner was eventually located who stated the youth “told him he had been in the crash.”  The owner told the officer the car is not insured and he had advised the 16-year-old not to drive it, but he did anyway.  Juvenile charges were initiated against the 16-year-old for “Michigan license never acquired,” “No Vehicle Insurance,” “Failing to Stop and ID at a Crash,” and “Failing to Stop in an Assured Clear Distance.”

Credit, Check, Identity Theft, and other Fraud:

Complainant listed her refrigerator for sale on an on-line store.  She was contacted by a subject stating she wanted to purchase the refrigerator for a client.  Complainant received a cheek in the mail for $2300.00 with instructions to deposit it and wire the difference in cash via Western Union to the purchaser.  Complainant noted the address of the bank listed on the check was “One World Trade Center” in New York and suspected the check was fraudulent and did not proceed with the transaction.

Complainant reported her car was broken into in Pontiac and her purse stolen.  She was contacted by her credit card company after several suspicious charges were made using her credit card.  She has since discovered a personal check that was inside the purse was forged and cashed at a banking institution in Troy.

Dairy Queen, 316 W. 14 Mile, 12/31, 1720 hrs.

Complainant reported a customer presented a $20.00 bill during the course of a purchase.  When the employee went to the back office to check with a manager on the legitimacy of the bill, the subject fled.  The bill turned out to be counterfeit.  Subject described as a B/M, 6’-0,” thin build, wearing a camo ¾ length jacket, winter cap, and jeans.

Complainant received a notice from IRS regarding unreported income from several jobs in 2006.  The jobs are in states the complainant never lived and at a business she never worked for.  She suspects someone fraudulently used her identity/social security number at the business.

Four credit fraud/identity theft reports taken.

Domestics/Family Troubles:

Troy Officers responded to five incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal enforcement action was taken.

Drugs/Narcotics:

Drunk/Intoxicated Driving Incidents of Interest:

Big Beaver and John R, Jan 4th, 2122 hrs.

Officers located an ’88 Cadillac Sedan Deville that a cell phone caller reported as a “possible drunk driver E/B on Big Beaver east of Rochester.”  The officer observed the Cadillac weaving as it drove along.  Other drivers had to take evasive actions to avoid colliding with it.  At one point it swerved right and struck the curb.  When the officer activated his emergency equipment to stop the vehicle, the driver did not respond and continued driving.  The driver eventually ran off the roadway and into a large pile of snow where the car came to rest.  The 69-year-old driver from Ann Arbor was confused and had no idea why he was being stopped.  He was evaluated by medical personnel on the scene and found not suffering from any medical issues.  He stated he “had a glass and a half of wine.”  He failed sobriety tests and was arrested.  He blew 0.14 on a breath test.

Embezzlements:

Macy’s, 2750 W. Big Beaver, 1/8, 1500 hrs.

LPO’s (Loss Prevention Officers) watched two employees conceal $901.75 worth of clothing items into two shopping bags.  They were stopped after they walked out at the end of their shift with out paying.  Each was carrying one of the bags.    Arrested were a 20-year old female and 18-year-old male.

Sears, 300 W. 14 Mile, 1/7, 2155 hrs.

LPO’s stopped a 24-year-old male cleaning crew member from Detroit as he left carrying a bag and discovered three pair of athletic shoes and a plaque concealed inside.  Total stolen/recovered:  $210.00.  While investigating him, they obtained information that his 34-year-old male companion and fellow crew member from Detroit stole a bag of mop heads earlier in the day.  LPO’s recovered those from his car in the lot.  Both were released by LPO’s pending police report and prosecution.

Macy’s, 500 W. 14 Mile, 12/20, 2355 hrs.

LPO’s initiated an embezzlement report against a 33-year-old female employee from Detroit after observing her conduct several fraudulent gift card transactions at her register. There were four transactions involved for a total of $463.00.  She admitted the thefts as well as using the cards herself.  Prosecution pending.

Home Invasions:

Revere, 1/3-1/5, 1000-1330 hrs.

Front door forced open with lock, door handle and doorframe damaged.  Bedrooms appeared to have been ransacked.  A pry bar was found in one of the bedrooms.  Two lap tops and two gold chains stolen.

Welling, 1/9, 1105 hrs.

Officers responded to a report of a possible home invasion in progress.  Upon arrival, they observed a bathroom window open and two male subjects inside smoking marijuana.  When the subjects saw the officers, they ran out the rear door wall.  The two-14-year old males from Troy were caught and taken into custody as they tried to climb a fence into an adjoining property.  Investigation revealed the side pedestrian door had been forced open.  A baggie of marijuana was recovered from the bathroom as was a makeshift pipe constructed out of a pop can.  The odor of burning marijuana was apparent in the room.  Follow-up with the resident and her teenaged daughter revealed the daughter found a homemade marijuana pipe in the garage the night before.  She also found damage to the pedestrian door leading into the garage and confronted the two subjects about being at her house.  They did not respond to her accusation, however reportedly asked if they could go there during the day on the 9th.  She reportedly told them “no.” Apparently her mother had confiscated her cell phone earlier and received a text message on it from the suspects indicating they were inside the house.  At approximately the same time, she received a call on her cell from someone from the neighborhood advising her they just saw a male subject they recognized as an associate of her daughter kick in the side door and enter her house.  Police were then called.  Juvenile petitions for home invasion were filed against the suspects and they were released to their respective parents.
